Sidney Post 217 8
Ottawa scored 13 runs with 2 Outs throughout the game. Rare bad defensive performance by Sidney as they lose their 2nd in a row after winning 10 straight.
Sidney is now 16-6 on the summer, and travels to Kalida High School for a re-match against the Lima Buckeyes on Sunday at 1:00 P.M.
Post 217 will attempt to avenge a 6-5 loss to the Buckeyes earlier this summer.

Sidney splits Twinbill with Greenville
Sidney Post 217 came ever so close to a doubleheader sweep of Greenville Wednesday night, but one bad inning in the first game resulted in a split between the two teams.
Sidney starter Brad Yinger was sharp in the opener, allowing only five hits and throwing just 72 pitches in going the distance. But three of those hits came in one inning and led to all the Greenville runs in a 3-2 verdict.
Sidney bounced back to take the second game by a 6-4 final to leave its record on the year at 17-7.
Post 217 returns to action Sunday at home against Ottawa in a doubleheader.
The first game was scoreless after five innings, but Sidney broke the tie in the top of the sixth on a single by Jude DeLoye, a double by Joe Engle and a single by Yinger.
But in the bottom of the inning, Greenville got three runs after two were out on a single, a double and a two-run homer by catcher Gray.
Sidney got a run in the top of the seventh on a solo home run by Keith Schoenherr, but that was all it could manage.
Yinger struck out three and walked two for Sidney.
Schoenherr and Engle had two hits, and Jonathan Lowe added a double.
In the second game, Sidney sprinted to a 6-0 lead before Greenville made it interesting with a four-run fifth. But that was all the hosts could muster.
Sidney took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on an RBI single by Derek Coverstone, then added two more in the third when Ryan Geier belted a two-run homer for a 3-0 lead.
Post 217 stretched the lead out to 6-0 with three more runs in the top of the fourth. Schoenherr singled and Coverstone doubled. A Cory Echols grounder scored Schoenherr and moved Coverstone to third, and later in the inning, pinch-runner Jon Murphy scored on a double steal. The final run came home on DeLoye’s single.
Ryan Leugers was the winner, with Engle getting a save.

Post 217 routs Van Wert 12-2
It started and ended on a home run, with a lot of offense in between, as the Sidney Legion baseball team closed out the home portion of its schedule with a 12-2 District Two win over Van Wert Wednesday night at Custenborder Field.
Post 217 needed just two pitches to open the scoring as Ryan Geier drove a 1-0 pitch over the fence in center for his second home run of the season. Van Wert starter Damon Joseph retired the next two batters, but the Sidney offense wasn't done yet as singles by Joe Engle and Brad Yinger set the stage for Patrick Mescher, who smacked a three-run home run to center, his second of the year, to make it 4-0.
Sidney added another run in the second on a Jude DeLoye sacrifice fly, but Van Wert took advantage of a pair of walks from starting pitcher Ryan Leugers in scoring a run without a hit in the top of the third.
A Joe Engle RBI double in the fourth, though, got that run back and Sidney broke the game wide open with five in the fifth. A throwing error and grounders off the bats of Colin Zwiebel and Jonathan Lowe produced the first three runs and Post 217 extended the margin to 11-1 as DeLoye and Yinger each knocked in a run with a single.
Leugers allowed just an infield hit in the fourth and struck out nine in his six innings of work, but Post 178 temporarily avoided the run-rule in the seventh against reliever Caleb Vorhees as Malichi Murphy doubled with one out and later scored on a wild pitch.
The game appeared headed to the eighth as the first two Sidney batters were retired in order, but DeLoye ended it by driving the first pitch he saw down the left field line for his fifth home run of the season and 25th of his three-year Legion career.
"We've only played five games over the last three weeks, so I was concerned how we would come out tonight," said Sidney coach Bill Shoffner. "The Geier and Mescher home runs in the first really gave us a spark and we carried that the rest of the way."
"Leugers gave us another strong outing and our defense was good for the most part," added Shoffner. "We are going to play either Van Wert or St. Marys to start the District tournament, so these two games are important for us to build some momentum."
Geier was four-for-five on the night with a double to go along with his home run and scored three times while seven of the other eight starters in the Post 217 lineup each had two hits.
Sidney, now 18-7 overall and 4-1 in District Two, wraps up the regular-season slate tonight at St. Marys. A win would tie Post 217 with Lima for the league title and would result in a coin flip for the top seed in the upcoming district tournament.

Sidney Gets By St. Marys
ST. MARYS — It seemed to be a foregone conclusion that Sidney would defeat St. Marys Thursday night here in District Two Legion action.
After all, Post 217 was going for a share of the league title a night after run-ruling Van Wert and had defeated St. Marys 13-3 in the first meeting this season.
But, as the old cliché goes, that’s why they play the games as Sidney had to score twice in the eighth to take the lead and then held off a Post 323 rally in the ninth to escape with a 3-2 decision.
Sidney closes out the regular season with a 19-7 overall record and a 5-1 District Two mark, good for a tie for first with Lima. The top seed and matchups for the district tournament, which begins on Saturday at Van Wert, will be determined today and be available on
sidneylegionbaseball.com.
Starters Brad Grillot of Post 217 and Sweeny of St. Marys were locked up in a scoreless duel until the fourth, when Post 323 scored an unearned run on a bases-loaded walk to Sweeny.
Sidney, though, came right back to tie the game in the top of the fifth. Justin Hoying led off with a hit to left and after moving up to second on a Mitch Boerger sacrifice, Jon Murphy singled through the right side of the infield to plate Hoying.
It stayed that way until the sixth, when St. Marys regained the lead on a walk, a hit batsman and two wild pitches.
Post 217 was retired in order in the seventh, but would put together a game-winning rally in the eighth. Patrick Mescher hit the first pitch of the inning up the middle for a hit and Ryan Geier followed with a bunt to advance Mescher to second.
Pinch-hitter Keith Schoenherr then hit a short fly ball to right that dropped in just out of the reach of the right fielder and bounced away, allowing Mescher to score the tying run.
Schoenherr went to third as St. Marys tried to get Mescher at the plate and then scored as Sweeny picked up the ball at the plate and threw wildly into left field.
Joe Engle, who came in relief of Grillot in the seventh, faced just seven batters in his first two innings of work, but found himself in a jam in the ninth as Post 323 had its first two hitters reach on an infield hit and a hit batsman.
Engle, though, bounced back and closed out the win with a strikeout, a grounder that resulted in a force out at third and a fly ball to right.
"Give St. Marys credit, they played a good game tonight," said Sidney coach Bill Shoffner. "We hit some balls hard, but it was at their defense most of the time and they made the plays. We finally got a couple of breaks in the eighth and then held on from there."
Grillot allowed just one hit over six innings with three strikeouts while Engle picked up the win, giving up two hits in three innings with three strikeouts.
"Grillot and Engle both threw the ball well," said Shoffner. "They kept us in the game and gave our offense a chance to come back."

Post 217 in finals after 14-4 win
VAN WERT — The anticipated finals matchup in the District Two American Legion Baseball Tournament is now a reality, after Sidney Post 217 routed Van Wert for the second time in the tournament, 14-4, to emerge from the loser’s bracket Tuesday at Van Wert.
