In the Boys 300 meter hurdles, there was a re-run of this event after an athlete in lane 2 of the finals hit his hurdle, sending it into lane 1. The runner in lane 1 was impeded, and therefore, a re-run was chosen as the answer to the problem. However, I feel bad for the athletes involved. One athlete who originally qualified in the top 4, didn't qualify the 2nd time around. Also one athlete finished barely in 3rd after finishing a strong 2nd the first time, which cost him a better lane at regionals. The impeded runner finished 7th the first time and finished 6th the 2nd time (because the runner who knocked the hurdle in his lane was DQed) the 2nd time around. His time both times...was 2 full seconds back from the top 4 who go to regionals.

I know all of this is based on the rules set forth for this situation, but it seems unfair to the kid who didnt qualify the 2nd time around. I saw him walk off dejected....man was that hard. And I am not even from his school.

I was there - saw it all.

Seemed like a re-run for JUST the offended runner in lane 1 would have been appropriate - if he ran faster than 4th place time, he goes on.

In the first running, that athlete who was 4th barely outleaned the athlete who subsequently beat him in the second running so it wasn't like he had a 'lock' on 4th (although I agree, he did it in the first running when is should have "counted.") I bet that young man who qualified the second time was glad there was a re-run - he made the most of it.

As far as the athlete who you say has lost a 'better lane' - I thought every lane was 300m to the finish line? I've seen athletes win from every lane, so unless it's something mental there is no 'better lane.' Besides, if he starts feeling discouraged, he can be glad that he HAS any lane at regionals and didn't get bumped like the other athlete during the re-run.

Sometimes the rules do get in the way ... best of luck to the athletes who made it to regional - we'll see which of these four (I'm thinking at least 3 of these 4 will make it to state and Bergman should win it all) go on.

I don't know if Bryce will win it all, but I think he will be top 3. He absolutely destroyed his heat in the 300s tonight.

Hi Silverwings...thanks for your comments. The only thing I would say is...in running these hurdles myself many times...and then the 400 hurdles later on...the innner lanes are tighter and harder to hurdle in on the turns. I didn't say it couldn't be done....I just know from experience about that sort of thing...and lane placement does make a difference.
The runner who lost out on the lane placement is a good enough athlete that it didn't end up mattering at the regional qualifying tonight. He advanced 2nd in his heat to Bergman who ran his usual amazing race. It will be a good final between the athletes at regionals....and very fun to watch.

Glad to hear that the re-run didn't materially affect anyone (except the young man who got bumped).

While the 'head-to-head' competition through district and regionals is exciting, sometimes I think the OHSAA should just adopt qualifying standards and take the top 16 to Columbus, run a semi-final, and then let the top 8 square-off in the finals.

Again, congrats to those Minster district athetes as they head to the state meet!

(By the way, I thought I heard the top 4 times so far in the 110 HH were the same athletes as at Minster - the competition is tough out of that district!)

Thanks Nosoup - but I was aware of the times in D-3 around the state.

My comment was directed at the southwest regional and that most likely the Minster qualifers - Horn, Bergman, Reichert and Sanders - will be the 4 state representatives from that region.

Also, the times at Minster were into about a 40 MPH headwind (the straightaway runs W to E) while at Spencerville I think they run N-S so wind wasn't as much a factor there. I believe Horn's 14.2 and Bergman's 14.3 are more representative of their abilities.

IMHO (barring injury or hitting a hurdle!) the final 8 at state will be Bergman, Farkus (East Palestine), Horn, Horstman, Nickles, Reichert, Smith (Lakota), Wiedenhoft (Danbury Lakeside).

Horn has already beaten Nickles, Bergman (twice), and Reichert, so I think he will win it all ... but I've been wrong before and Horn has a very sore hamstring.

Don't forget Schulze from Versailles. He was pretty close to Bryce in the 110s in qualifiers. He's got a good shot at making it to Columbus

The weather difference between Spencerville and Minster must have been amazing. There was at most a 10 mph North wind for the finals, whereas Minster had a 40 mph East wind? Good luck to all the hurdlers!
