PHS9610...Jim Caserta, quite the player. Good fullback too, as I remember. I believe the game I mentioned was in 1974. No hitter in 5 innings by the guy. We went down 27-0. It was so bad I probably shouldn;t try to remember. I was glad that I hit the ball, of course didn't fall. He was one of the two hardest throwers I saw in High School. Might have a good curve. He had a lot of K's.

Adog.....did you throw a few in your day ?

Would that have been Maury Hoover, he had a 90 mph fastball and good breaking stuff? He was being looked at by Detroit but it never worked out for some reason.

That was probably the guy. Word was someone in the show was after him. I think Paulding blew everyone away that year.

Like I said in an earlier post we pretty much owned the NWC in the 70's, had a good program and a the best coach around.

Was Jack Smith on that team,BBG?? He also threw hard. He was with the Tigers in AAA.

Jack played in 1977-78 he played after I did, and he did throw hard, its a real shame what happened to him.

I think Jefferson is capable of a real nice season. Hitting has been our soft spot the past couple seasons...but we have experience. Our pitching is pretty solid. I'd like to see Joseph build upon his crafty ways to emerge as our #1 (co-#1 with Miller). I think Schuerman (SS) could be ready for a breakout season. If the chips bounce our way we could snatch the NWC crown. We're not the favorite...but I think we're a legitimate contender.
I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

Shane Stallard was also a stud pitcher for the Panthers back in the early 90's when they made a run to the regional finals. I know he was getting some serious looks from D-1 schools, but just didn't have the grades. Went to Glen Oak Community College in Michigan instead. Never really did much with baseball after that.

Dman - I too think Delphos may have a pretty solid 9. I question the pitching a little, but if the D can support them, they could be a stout team.

How did the teams finish last year? Who are returning players from each team that may "lead the way"?

QUOTE(likeitis @ Jan 25 2008, 12:58 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Predicted order of finish for the N.W.C. in 2008:

1. Paulding Gained valuable experience from summer programs. Competes strong with W.B.L.schools. Will play anyone.
2. Crestview Always a solid program. Briggs Orsbon great athlete. Team always solid defensively, very well coached on all levels.
3. Ada Vermillion: Very good hitter. Overlooked because of Dysert, better hitter. Embarrassed outside N.W.C.
4. L.C.C. Kottenbrock, Snyder decent pitchers. Saine, best left handed hitter in league. Shaky defense as a team. Hurting behind the plate.
5. Delphos Jeff. Coach puts in the effort. Battles other sports for player's committment. Will have a couple good pitchers. Growing program.
6. Col. Grove Beautiful facility. Solid young players. Energetic young coach.
7. Allen East Started summer program. Nowhere to play because of new school. One of the best hitters and catchers in the area. No one else.
8. Spencerville Marginal at best. Not a lot of talent. Look for walks, don't swing the bat. Although beat L.C.C. in summer ball.
9. Bluffton Lost Wiebentholer on the mound. Not much else. Need to create interest and build.
10, Lincolnview Lost diamond and best hitter. Coming off marginal season. 07 decent J.V. squad.

Not sure who all is back for everyone, but in my book ...

Should be Improved - Jefferson, Paulding, Spencerville

Some drop-off - LCC & Crestview (a lot to replace), Bluffton, Lincolnview

May be better, but record may not show by much - Allen East, Grove

Not for sure / stay near the same - Ada

Well grove's pitching looks pretty good. Their rotation is probably gonna be in any order Nate Bogart, Adam Osterhage, Brandon Hovest and maybe Jake miller. As far as offense goes, they can be explosive and put 10 runs on you real quick..just depends on how well they can gel and get comfortable at the plate. They have some decent speed and power to back it up....soo who knows what could happen on any given night.

Now that "tryout time" is upon us - How do everyone's numbers look? Anyone short players? Anyone making cuts? Any surprises - injuries, players not coming out? What is your team's biggest need? Any newcomers / transfers?

Well i talked to a paulding coach, and he said there numbers arent very good. It will not affect the varsity that mutch, but i think its hurting the JV alot. The two that hurt the varsity some was the arend kid, and troyer kid, they didnt end up comong out. I think he said 10 kids for JV, and thats if they are all eligible. So paulding will not be making cuts. To me pauldings weak spot is at shortstop. There second baseman can play there, but he is better at second, and with him at short they get weak at second. I think they have one new kid from hilltop, but i havent heard any news on him.

My recall on Paulding baseball is that they should have a lot of pretty good Seniors this year. Maybe not any Kottenbrock's pitching, or a Dysert or Orsbon - but plenty of solid players just below that level. I've seen them play a couple times the last 2 or 3 summers and been impressed. I also noticed they get a good turn out in fall leagues where I seen a few of them were playing. How many seniors? This is one reason I think they could be tough in the NWC. I don't really recall an Arend in the group or Troyer name in a prominent role on the diamonds. Were these 2 seniors? Why are numbers dropping so much there at the biggest school in the NWC? Only 10 JV? Are they playing juniors there if they have a varsity full of seniors?

I think they have 7 or 8 seniors, who are all very talented. Only one of them i dont know about, he is the new kid from hilltop. The arend boy was the backup first baseman, and DH. Its not hard to miss him, he is 6'3 - 6'4 250+, and hit several home runs on JV last year, and had a decent summer. The troyer kid was the starting shortstop most the time in the summer when he was there, missed alot for basketball. They were only juniors, so it will hurt more next year then this year.

Yea the numbers thing is hard to figure out. You would think after having good summers the last two years it would get kids interested, but i guess not. The 10 on jv is without any juniors as of right now. They started with 11, and had two freshman quit, but one came back out to put them back to 10. Im not sure but it could be possible that a junior ends up on JV some of the time to give them 11.

ADog, didn't you have trouble getting the ball from third to first in less than 2 bounces?
