The Reds are actively trying to trade Hamilton and or Encarnacion for good starting pitching. Have been talking to Cubs and Giants about Sean Marshall and Tim Lincicum. These and other teams want to get Jay Bruce from us but we are holding on to him and if we cannot get anything done, the reds are said to be looking at FA's and non roster invitees such as Brett Tomko if you can believe that. The Giants want to pawn pitcher Lowry on us instead of Lincicum and the Cubs are supposedly very interested in Hamilton but only offering Marshall. Lincicum is a potential stud and I would continue to try and get him but not give up Bruce. I would give them Hamilton and EE for him. That would put Keppy at third and Hooper and Freel in center until Bruce arrives. Get it done!

Jay Bruce goes only if you get two frontline starters in return. After teams balk at that you say "ok, well, I'll stop playing games if you do." Basically that says "Hey, morons, get a grip if you think we're giving you Jay Bruce for a guy who only plays every 5th day and who is probably gonna throw his arm out sooner or later, anyway!"

Trade EE for like Kerry Wood or Mark Prior smile.gif...whichever one isn't the FA, presently. See about catching lightning in a bottle (i.e. one of them staying remotely healthy).

Cantu was released today.

Look for the Reds to make a Rule 5 pick.
It worked out well last year with Hamilton and Jared Burton.

What, releasing Cantu? Damn, didn't they just TRADE FOR him last year when they were out of it? Gave up their top AAA middle relief pitcher if I remember. Oh well, geez...I thought he did well in his short time with the Reds. Damn.

I am pretty sure it was a trade. Calvin Medlock, I belive, was the pitcher's name. I think there were other players involved as well, but that was the only name I could think of off the top of my head.

I found this post today on a Red's Blog:

The answer was in the newspaper today...it WAS Krivsky at work again...he let Cantu go so the 40 man roster had 1 open spot for a rule 5 waiver claim....baseball's version of the garage sale for players with too many years in the minors or players sent down too many times and have no options left....

Krivsky found a couple of warm french fries in the dumpster once in Burton and Hamilton, now all the garbage smells like a smorgasbord to him....It's rediculous....Ellison and Coats were his last years rule 5 delicacies...generally, there are good reasons why these guys are waivered....Hamilton spent 7-8 years in the minors mostly injured, hitting .260 in A ball, and smoking crack....Burton had a dead arm, and couldn't hit the strike zone with a grenade.....both have made the most of the opportunity (in a very small sample size last year) but these are RARE occurances with waiver claims...

I think I would rather had Cantu hang around after all, he hit .290+ last year, had an All-Star, full-season year 2 years ago, and makes the MLB equivelent of $9.00/hr in today's pay scale. There are ZERO lefties that play 1B on this team that hit above .200 against lefty pitching, so you better believe that someone is going to get AB's there next year from the right side. Keppinger ? Maybe, but he has no power, so you get a younger version of Grandpa Conine at 1B- a .270 hitter with 8 HR power in the #5 spot ? Or maybe Encarnacion will move his stone glove to 1b while Kepp platoons at 3b? Maybe. Then you get a .270 hitter with 12 HR power in the 5th spot playing 1b...hope we face a LOT of righty pitching next year...and Sergio Valenzuela is going to stay on the MLB roster all season ?? C'mon Krivsky, put the crackpipe down, ok?

Gumshoe... what you failed to mention is that Cantu was eligible for arbitration...meaning the REDS would have to pay him based on all of his major league time....therefore the good year he had would drive his value up.... by releasing him, they can try to resign him as a free agent on their own terms not the terms set by MLB

plus....don't be surprised if he's not listed on this big steriod (mitchell) report that coming out tomorrow
Go Bucks!!
