Do you think they can pull off another great season? I think that we have the talent to do so and the determination. I can't wait until the regular season starts. What are your thoughts about the American League and the Tigers?

Well, last year I told everyone that Detroit was gonna surprise everyone and get into the playoffs...Low and behold, they did. I think they are definitely going to be very competitive again this year and should probably be right there ready for another playoff berth.

Good question Hovs5. Was last year a fluke? Or did Leyland make that much difference? They definitley have the pitching. I read the other day that Zumaya was regular hitting 102 mph withone pitch at 103. Now...thats smokin!!!! they added Gary Sheffield...we'll see how that pans out-but so far he seems to be happy to be there-even in a reduced role as DH. Will Craig Monroe ever become the consistent hitter that they need? Will Granderson cut down on his strikouts? Will the defense be there? Will Mike Maroth be able to make a come back.....just lots of questions right now. They seem to be doing well down in Florida.

Guys, as much as I`d love to see the Tigers repeat what they did last year I just don`t see it happening again. Remember they took off out of the gates like a bat outta hell then hovered around the .500 mark the rest of the year. Plus, I don`t think they`re going to sneak up on anybody this year. Don`t get me wrong, I think they`ll have a good year, but to accomplish what they did last won`t be an easy task.
But then again maybe they won`t do what they did last year. Maybe this year they can win it all. thumbup1.gif

BTW, nice to see some Tiger fans on this site. We`ve been in hiding long enough. Feels good to get out talk Tiger baseball again knowing that they`re going to be a respectable team if not one of the best in baseball.

We just took it to the Indians tonight. We have had a successful spring training season.

S.I. is picking the Indians to win the division and they pick them just ahead of Detroit in the overall power rankings. I guess I am naturally guarded with my optomism....but the Tigers have got some outstanding pitching. Hoping Verlander doesn't have any kind of sophomore jinx. It is nice to not be looking at "hoping" for a .500 season..........

first off, the tigers have many challenges to repeating as al champs. the first is their pitching, rogers is bound to drop off at some point, and when it happens it will be awful. verlander has to be able to adjust to the increased workload-hopefully pitching so much last season won't hurt his arm. bonderman is a great pitcher and needs to continue to improve and get that third pitch down, he worked last year w/ only 2 effective pitches. robertson in my opinion is underrated and will eat up the innings and should provide stability in this rotation. they have good relief pitching in rodney, zumaya, and jones. their offense should be pretty good this year, guillen is one of the top ss in the league and sheffield will have a good season. rodriguez is overrated in my opinion as a hitter, but still able to contribute. also, i dont disagree with the reds being ranked that low at all. they overachieved last year and i dont think it'll happen again, i could name 26 teams better than the reds.

Ha...MLB teams worse than the Reds: Pirates, Royals, Devil Rays, Orioles, Mariners, Marlins, Nationals, Rockies, Diamondbacks, Giants. Give or take a few, I guess...

no, but they always field at least a half decent team...last year I think they started sucky, but by the end of the season they were making some noise....

i'll give you the pirates, royals, nationals, and maybe the mariners and orioles. the orioles play in a way harder division than the reds, so their record might be worse-but i think they are the better team. the rays and marlins are both young, but i think that they are both better than the reds. I have no doubt that the d-backs and rockies are both better than the reds.
the reds have one pitcher who didnt overachieve last year in harang. arroyo is overrated and who else in that staff is even half way decent? (i dont include homer bailey at this point). lohse and milton are horrible. their bullpen is pretty awful, with the exception of bill bray and todd coffey.
adam dunn is really this team's only consistent performer. he has an amazing ops and hr numbers, but does strikeout a lot. other than him they have griffey, who if he can stay healthy isnt the same player he used to be. He will still hit decently but is a detriment in the field, one reason they moved him to rightfield. they've never given freel consistent playing time, but i get the feeling he's more of a hustle guy than a numbers guy (excluding steals).
the mariners have better pitching than the reds on the basis of their bullpen and felix. the orioles definitely have a better pitching staff in bedard, cabrera, loweon, and their bullpen. the d-backs shouldnt even be on this list w/ a staff of webb, johnson, hernandez, and doug davis. all four who are better than arroyo. the rockies have a bunch of consistent guys who eat up innings, along w/ an established closer in fuentes, as long as the humidor works again, the rockies will be just as good, if not better than the reds pitching staff.
In the field, the d-backs have better players at every position except left field, and maybe catcher if ross repeats his performance from last year. the rockies have more big guns than the reds in holliday, atkins, hawpe, tulowitzki, helton, and a pretty deep pitching staff. if ianetta performs like they think he will, they could compete in the west.
so maybe si is off by a few ranks, but in my eyes they got pretty close.

Yeah, now they say he'll be out until around the all-star break, in all likelihood.

Go Tigers!!!! Showing my age but I have never wavered since the 60's -- Kaline, Horton, Cash, Wert, McAuliffe, McClain and my personal fav - Bill Freehan behind the plate! I met Denny McClain a few years ago and he seemed really nice.

I don't think they will win as many as last year, but should be in it all the way!

Oh, yeah, I am a Cubs fan too. blink.gif
