Congrats to Elissa Ellerbrock on the record and OG on their 12th straight win. Titans are playing great as a team heading into the tournament

And great sportsmanship by the OG coach in getting Ellerbrock the record. :sarcasm:

I feel sorry for the player. Being put back in with a 25 pt lead with 2:30 to go just to get a record is all on the coach. She took every shot for the team until the end of the game when she finally got the record. In today's paper her stat line looked pretty good. During the end of the game you could see all the coaches and players jumping up and down as she got closer so it was obvious to everyone what the intent was. And how would a coach know the record was near while still coaching in the game? At the conclusion when the coaches met to shake hands it was obvious that
the Elida coaches took exception to this. It was a classless act by the coach. That is the nicest thing I can say.

Big Al... I agree with 100% of what you said. Ellerbrock is a nice player and a nice kid. I am happy she got the record but not at the expense of class and sportsmanship (or lack of it on OG's coach). They were up 28 pts with 1 minute to go. He called a timeout to set up a special play for her to score. WHY? Obviously she wasn't having a problem scoring.... Lets add starters were still in the game with 2 minutes to go in the game. OG is a very good team with good athletes... too bad their coach is a classless tool.

I have had the chance to see this situation a few times , our coach has pulled the rest of the starters and let the individual going for the record play another couple of minutes in attempt of the record . I have no issue with giving an athlete an opportunity to break a record but to put them back into the game seems a little questionable . As for coaches knowing the record and how close a player is to it that is 1st grade math .

As an old time, retired coach it sickens me when I see stuff like this happens. I don't care what anybody says records broke under these circumstances are artificial at best. It shows a total disrespect for a game that I have loved for over 40 years and more importantly to all the past great players and coaches that have set records in the pursuit of just trying to help their team win the game. It is the ultimate act of selfishness that I have seen gradually increase in high school sports that last few years. Anytime I see the pursuit of individual glory at the expense of playing the game the "right way". It saddens me. It is supposed to be a "team" game! A "group" of people, players, coaches in the pursuit of "Team" goals. "Team" records. If individual records happen in the pursuit of "team" goals: that is a great accomplishment! Not these farce records! Those are the records we should celebrate. It makes one question the character of this program. I know of many high character programs and high character coaches in the past and present that would consider doing this unthinkable. As an old coach take my word for it that character counts! Maybe just maybe that this is why this program under this coach has a lot of talent and a lot of wins but not many championships. Have yet to see them get past district! Don't get me wrong, Not blaming the kid! just as usual it is an adult problem. Makes me question the coach's real love and respect for the game. I know some past OG coaches and I can't believe they would do this. Maybe I am wrong here and maybe just to old to understand but you will never convince me this is right! Ever!

I will take the player with most career wins over the player with most career points any time. Some players are stat chasers, some players are "winners"!! Tim Duncun over Carmelo Anthony anyday, Anytime!

Stewie,
How is the posse? I thought most had moved on to CYO?

As far as the points record....most would agree that setting records is part of the game. However how it is done is open for debate.....running up the score happens A LOT.....Maybe the coach just got caught up in the moment or was trying to add to the legacy.

Rocket.... Just because running up the score happens a lot; does it make it right, acceptable and classy? He has burned MANY bridges with a lot of WBL coaches by doing this.... the cupboard wont be full forever and karma will make its showing. Its sad when your own fans are disgusted with "how it went down lastnight".

By the way, congratulations to Ellerbrock on getting 1000 points. A definite accomplishment. It is sad that it had to be accomplished in the manner in which it was.

Not 1000, she scored 35 last night to break the single game record

I take nothing away from the girl. But ask yourselves how many players this weekend could score 35 points against an over matched opponent if they had a coach that that only goal was to let one individual player get as many points as they could . To be willing to make a mockery of this great game of basketball for a personal goal. Think if Ty Mac would try to get Noah as many points as possible against a really bad team.

Not sure about the Posse RM. I don't know any of them.

I wonder how many of the Posse still have kids playing at OG? I also wonder if the parents and Posse memebers are happy with what they have at OG. If winning a lot of games is what they wanted, then I assume they are happy. If winning a District Championship or making a trip to C-bus, then they can't be to proud of the outcome.

I have alway been a Coach Smith supporter, simply because I always felt she got the shaft. I, nor anyone else, can possibly know how far she could have gottent the girls the past couple of years, but I feel pretty confident that the Posse and the parents felt that these past few years offered an opportunity to get to the big dance.

I almost wish that Coach Yant stays. It offers a good soap opera each year and creates bantering on this site, which has been lacking this year.

OG topics always seem to gain momemtum.

Stewie,

The shaft?????????
Did you happen to see the article in the Lima News?
I have attached it for you to read and maybe you'll understand what happened.
It wasn't about coaching ability.

Agree with everything said........no way in hell that the boys coach would allow this to happen. In a close game it would be a much different story. A 30 pt blowout win that by all appearances was over before it started isn't the time or place for it.....

Good to know that the Posse isn't involved in this....and as you know, an OG thread does almost as well as an LCC thread.....especially if some added drama is involved

Congrats to Ellerbrock and the Lady Titans on a great game and sorry for the Lady Bulldogs to have to put up with this classless act. Just consider where they are from and that says it all. Did I just cover the best on both worlds?

You know maybe Elida should have defended Miss Ellerbrock a little better.....the lady bulldogs put 5 players on the floor, too. I know Elida's girls program has been down for awhile, but they have 2 head coaches. you would think between the 2 of them they could have figured out a way to slow down Elissa Ellerbrock.

My only thought on this is how does Coach Yant explain himself if his best player goes down with a torn ACL in the final minute of a blowout game? This stuff catches up to you in the end....

what if one of the best players goes down with 3:00 or 4:00 left in a blowout? Like Bill belichick said "If you can tell me who is going to get hurt and when it is going to happen, tell me and I will take them out.".
