I'm not sure why a school like Riverdale can't get a few more kids out. I know there are some out there that argue that you can't have soccer and football and be competitive in both in a small school, but I don't buy that. I think we are the third-largest school in the BVC (we're still small, though). L-B, VB, and Riverdale all have football, cross country, golf, and soccer, yet the participation in each of those sports at Riverdale (except soccer) is not nearly as big as at L-B or VB. I'm not convinced that soccer has a negative influence on our football program as much as the kids that are just sitting on their duff that could have an impact. I really believe that year-round specialization in a single sport, video games, jobs, and just the lack of school spirit that used to be more prevalent in earlier generations has really hurt participation in HS sports.
Maybe Riverdale needs to name their football stadium "Falcon Stadium" and school spirit will increase... :D

I'm not talking about school spirit at Riverdale...I'm talking about at all schools. A generation ago, kids didn't jump ship to go play for a neighboring school so they could reunite their AAU team. School alliances aren't what they used to be.

I agree Falcon..was just being a smart a** in my post. I definitely agree that kids moving around is part of the problem but not the whole story. Definite agree that school alliance is not what it used to be

This is not a problem at Riverdale. And it you are generalizing for all schools, why does Arlington, Carey, Kenton, Ada, etc, all have success on the gridiron? These are all schools that we share borders with or very close to. I always here "kids these days" as being the problem, but why does crossing the line into another district suddenly make that excuse disappear?

Great post WebFire...... the key word in it is "excuse". Instead of searching for a way to get better, a lot of parents take the easier route by searching for an excuse instead. JMHO

I agree it has nothing to do with kids leaving to go play for other schools and joining "AAU" Football teams especially at the smaller school level. With a school like Riverdale the football program has been on a decline now for many years and it takes a special group of Players/Parents/Coaches to change a culture. As mentioned above, Arlington, Carey, Kenton, etc all have established programs where all 3 factors are in place and they have continued success in football. Too many people look for the easy excuse as a bail out when in all reality the football team isn't very good b/c not everyone is onboard. You have to put in the time and effort to get the results. Hardin Northern is another example of a program that was run into the ground by parents and players and look where they are now after being a powerhouse for so many years.

Kind of like in Rocky 3, Mickey said Rocky got "civilized". We have too many kids who've had an easy life. Football takes a little nastiness, a little blood, sweat and tears. It's tough. You wish kids would just play for the good old fashioned school and community.

bob22, any change in your negativity?

First level points by BVC schools 2013 vs. 2014 (2013 listed first and 2014 listed 2nd) through first 2 weeks of the season.

Arc 0 , 4
Arl 7.5, 10
CR 0, 0
HL 4, 4 (assuming they finish win on Sunday)
Leip 7.5, 3.5
LB 7.5, 9.5
MC 3.5, 7
NB 3.5, 7.5
PG 7, 0
Riv 0, 0
VB 3.5, 7.5
Van 0, 3.5

7 schools with more points this year (is this dubious?)
3 schools remaining the same
2 schools with less points this year

The split divisions are better for Harbin points. I even think the league was better last year.....

I've got more reasons but I'll let you digest this first.

And I don't think the BVC will have any 0-10 teams this year. Need a BVC historian on this one to see when the last time that happened

And weeks 3-10 will be equal to last year because they now go 6-6 each week (same as 5-5 last year)

The 6 teams with playoff hopes are better with this set-up

The 6 teams with no playoff hopes are better with this set-up because they had 1 more week to possibly get a win......VANLUE ends the streak!

Ask Vanlue if they are happy they got to play St. Wendy week #2 instead of LB/MC/ARL

Similar thing couple probably be said for NB

2011 and 09. And unless somebody starts hitting the ocean from the beach, a certain school is looking 0-10 square in the eye.

As for Harbins? What benefit does Mc/LB/Arl get from NB's wins? Zip Zilch Nada . And again Arlington coulda dumped Riverdale long ago if they wanted to.

I honestly think LB is more happy replacing Vanlue with D3 Bowling Green, whom they beat today. And for second level points BG beat D4 Rossford in week 1 and will most likely beat D4 Otsego this coming week.

bob22,

you are correct they get zip from NB's wins. That's the only argument I've seen from you and I agree with the zip zilch nada.

I've tried to keep the math simple for you now with just showing the extra first level points for 2 weeks which is easy for most to understand.

When the season ends you will see a few BVC teams with 8-2, 9-1 or possible 10-0 records with higher Harbin points than they've ever had with that number of wins. I'll have more info later.
