What the heck is going on with this school?? I have read some and heard more that varsity coach Paul Wayne and his longtime JV coach Ron Engel are being non renewed. WHAT??????? Are you kidding me? Is there no respect or loyalty anymore? One of the most successful and respected coaching staffs in NW Ohio being treated like this? Is this really true? If so, man if I were a school in search of a coach, I would be all over him. Or perhaps a varsity coach looking for a top notch assistant? Tiger fans, what's the scoop on this? Unbelievable if true!

Since both Wayne & Engel are retire - rehires, their teaching contracts were non renewed. They are paid as step 5 teachers, and the board wants to save money by replacing them with first year teachers. That is really kind of a weak excuse since the savings aren't all that much. I think the board still has interest in Wayne coaching basketball, but he is not happy with the way this was handled and may be making other plans. This was a very short sighted decision by the board since it has really ticked off the loyalist of supporters of the school, those who have lead efforts to keep the school and ensured that every school levy issue in the past 50 years has passed. This might result in short term savings, but is a long term disaster. They are killing the goose that laid the golden egg.

Holgate's Board decision may lead to a Napoleon type situation. Napoleon has historically had issues with passing levies, teacher - board conflicts. You may not like Wayne's coaching style, but the residents, teachers, administration, and board have always worked together to support the school, at least up to now.

Did the school board consider the cost of a new SCORE BOARD when they made this decision. The old score board is incapable of going past 35 pts.!!!

It is my understanding and what I have read is the school super stated that the school could save $45,000 a year by not rehiring the 3 man and hiring new teachers. Wayno's basketball job is still his if he wants it. Wayno signed a unheard of 4 yr.retied- rehire contact and that expired this month. The school admin and BOE should worried about filling positions if this is what plan is. Open position if the school and Wayno's statement is true: PE, math, 2nd grade, Art, 1 other teaching position. Coaching: Cross County (B&G), HC boys basketall, AD, HC football plus all the asst. needed for basketball and football. From what I heard at the shop, Wayno told the BOE and super, if he isn't teaching , he isn't coaching. I guess its all about the mighty dollar.

I was able to talk with "Wayne O" at this year's regional tournaments at BGSU....he was none too pleased as he knew it already then.....he "could" take his act on the road but I doubt it....

If he is in fact set on doing both tben I see the BOE going in a different direction. For the number of wins the man has he also has to have tbe lowest ppg. avg.... ..

If you know the BOE Pres, this really shouldnt shock anyone. I was told by a Holgate teacher that the gentlemen in question found out that they would not be re-hired for the teaching positions when they saw the openings posted on the schools internal job board. You may not like Pauls style of coaching but you cannot discredit his success and dedication to the school/community/kids...and I am by no means a Holgate fan but recognize a power play when I see one.

And Ike is correct, the story I read was that the three coaches/teachers in question would command a $49K salary if re-hired vs. $33K for a level one teacher. Feedback I'm hearing from people in the school district is that if the BOE want the levy to pass in the Fall, they may want to re-think their position...but refer back to my opening comment for that one

Don't these teachers get their retirement pay in addition to the 49K salary? 16*3 = 48K saved. Sounds like they may be saving the jobs of others if they hire new teachers.

Yep, it looks like Coach Wayne is done. Posted yesterday:

These is a board meeting on May 20, so I guess those who would like Coach Wayne to stay have until then to convince the BOE to keep him, otherwise this meeting may be the one where the reignation is accepted.

Unless the Tigers find a suitable replacement you can expect Holgate's boys basketball program to drop to the levels of mediocrity, or worse.

Wayne to fairview. Will knock off OG in a few years playing a delayed style of play (would be interesting)

Fairview parents would run Wayne out of town if He would go there because he might yell at their kid for being lazy or not working hard enough. Paul will be done if he doesn't come back to holgate. Holgate has had a great coach that is only 4 wins away from the 500 mark all with one school, that's impressive. I fear it will take a school leavy not getting past to show the BOE that they messed up.

BOE is elected, vote them out. Why punish a school district for BOE moves. I'm not sure, but the district is probably bigger than one teacher. Yes, Wayno has done a lot for the basketball program at Holgate, he is know state wide. It was the school that put him in the place to do the things that he has done. Does the school owe him or does Wayno owe the school. Who pays him when goes to Columbus for district meeting, coach's meetings in Columbus, AD mtgs in Columbus, I'm sure there are others. I'm sure the school has to get a sub to teach his P.E. classes. when he is gone. I wish Wayno all the luck in the world. It would be great for him to get 500 wins. I think the school is offering him the basketball job.

Any fans who would rather lose 70-65 then win 30-28 aren't really fans. And come on, he was talking about Fairview. What do kids looking to get to college have to do with Fairview? Have you seen the kids they have?

Not sure if that job posting is indicative of Wayno not being back. Tying the AD job to a teaching position is fairly common. The coaching position would be a seperate supplemental contract, no?

If the above is the case then he himself is making the decision to not coach.

Let's cut thru the crap here. This decision by the Holgate BOE has very little to do with saving money as they have publicly said. Two of the board members had senior boys on this year's team. Both were not regular starters and had marginal basketball skills and ability. It is no secret those board members were not happy with Wayne, or the other coaches, as it relates to their sons. They are hiding behind the cost saving benefit in order to get even with the coaches. This is not the first time this has happened at a school where board members with basketball children pull a power play to get even. The whole school district will suffer as a result, and the levy renewals coming up this fall will not be a sure thing as they always have been in the past.
