Letter: Sportsmanship lacking at game
Sportsmanship lacking at game
I am writing in regards to the picture of the St. John’s student body holding The Lima News in front of their faces during New Bremen’s starting lineups Friday night. How do we justify sportsmanship anymore? This is flat out disrespectful to all high school sports and should not have been allowed.
It was also brought to my attention that during the St. John’s versus Ottoville girls contest a few weeks ago that several Ottoville students were not allowed into the gym until they removed certain clothing that was derogatory toward St. John’s. Dressing up for games is a great thing along with cheering for your team, but disrespecting another school during a starting lineup is an outrage.
There is no difference between the two incidents and if this was not allowed; the newspaper stunt should not have been allowed either. Ohio stresses sportsmanship more and more every year and something like this is far from good sportsmanship. Doing it is one thing, but publishing the picture of it in the newspaper for all eyes to see is also wrong and should not have happened.
If I was a New Bremen fan at this game I would have been outraged and lost all respect for St. John’s sports. My question is, how far do schools have to go before something is done about it? An incident like this is uncalled for and one of the most disrespectful things I have ever seen in sports.

I have really been biting my tongue on this, but yes, I do agree that the DSJ girl could have been suspended for the season for the incident......but, 2 other parties from the L'view side should have received a much stiffer penalty....as a matter of fact, one received nothing at all....most on this thread have only heard bits and pieces of what happened and much is not close to the truth....I noticed that when anything mentioned against L'view concerning the surrounding events, all the DSJ haters get quiet....there is a reason for that......I think it would be wise for all to move on and forget about the incident.....the season is close to being over and so is their high school careers!!!!!!!

I think there could be truth to that. I thought it was pathetic that the Ottoville students couldn't wear those outfits to the girls game at DSJ. For what reason exactly? To protect their valedictorian? To protect their image? A girl is caught punching a player on film at least twice but is only suspended 2 games? Glad we are setting perfect examples.

Recker receives K of C scholarship Written by Staff Reports Monday, February 04, 2013 6:39 PM

The Delphos Knights of Columbus Council 1362, in conjunction with the Ohio State Knights of Columbus, recently awarded the $1,000 “Christopher Fund Scholarship” for the 2012-13 school year to St. John’s High School senior Jessica Recker. “Jessica epitomizes the caliber of student St. John’s and our Catholic schools produce,” Scholarship Chairman Jerry Backus said. “Jessica is an excellent example to her classmates and underclassmen.” Recker, the daughter of Fred and Teresa Recker, currently carries a GPA of 4.0 and ranks first in a class of 75. She has been active in her church, serving as greeter, Mass server, church cantor, youth choir member and Eucharist minister, is on the Liturgy Team and a member of the CRESPI Society. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, was a Buckeye Girls State delegate, a Allen-Lima Youth Leadership member, a Mission Society member, served as sophomore class president, was a four-year member of pep band, concert band (first chair) and marching band (named Outstanding Musician of the Year) and recipient of the Lima Elks Student of the Month Award. She is a member of SADD and Junior Optimists and participates in basketball, golf and soccer. In the community, Recker participated in “40 Days for Life,” and the Delphos Canal Day’s Queen Pageant (3rd runner-up) and volunteers at Stadium Park, Our Daily Bread soup kitchen in Lima and the Delphos Public Library’s Summer Reading Program. She completed her junior service at Vancrest Assisted Living Center. (Submitted photo)

I have been to many boys games as well and went to one where Fort Jennings played Delphos St Johns in tournament. The student body of DSJ all turned their backs when the Fort Jennings players were being introduced. Some games I have seen them with newspapers as well. I think that is very disrespectful and obviously they think that it is ok for them to do that? They may not be the only ones to do that, I am just saying whatever schools do this, someone from that high school needs to step in and actually show some responsibility in cracking down on this.
I also find it comical that the same school that allows this is the same school that wouldn't let kids from Ottoville wear "fighter" outfits to the game a few weeks ago. Not sure what they looked like, didn't get a chance to see that, but it just amazes me.

Went to an OSU and Northwestern game in football. At a set time all the Northwestern students held up their car keys in refernce to OSU students getting their car for them. SO DISRESPECTFUL
