Great article Woodynbo. I would love to see OHSAA give the nod for 8-man football. Makes more sense than expanding divisions to benefit DI schools who (God forbid) only have 400 boys to choose from.
IMO, 8-man football would be huge for SE and NW Ohio especially.

Yeah... thats exactly what I was saying!!...

Maybe the kid has heard... oohhh, I don't know... one or more of the following before...
"Why should I go to BOE meeting?"
"Why should I go to music boosters meetings?"
"Why should I go to "PTA" meetings?"
"Why should I volunteer to help at X, Y or Z?"
"Why should I go to athletic board meetings?"
"Why should I?"....
"Why should I?"...
"Why should Johnny have to go to all those summer workouts just to play football/ basketball/ fill in a sport ? If he does decide to go out for the team and doesn't get equal playing time ,THEN, I will go to a BOE meeting and DEMAND the coach be fired!!"

But if you want to go ahead and think I was saying kids should be "forced" to play a sport, .... you go ahead and do that!! but I'm gonna need another
!!

This is going to sound bad, but I'll go ahead and give it a shot. We've "anti-harrassed - anti-bullied" our kids into this situation. There was a time years ago when kids didn't play golf or soccer because they got teased by some of the students/ community/ parents. It just wasn't cool to golf, play soccer or cross country. Yes, there was a slim few who did it but they weren't going to play football anyway. Many of those kids loved playing football and was thankful for it years after graduation, especially if they were part of successful teams. So it's not "forcing" as you may say, but it's more looking out for them down the road.

Where did I ever say kids should be forced to play football or any other sport for that matter??
Gamekeeper came up with thats what he thought I meant... I simply meant that SOME kids now hear "why should I " from mom and /or dad and that it rubs off on them and they(the kid) say that about going out for a sport instead of just playing the sport and making a difference on the team.

Yes I am sorry I mistook you HH75 your meaning you are correct. I get what you were saying now, and like common sense was saying I still know there are kids that football is just simply not for them and were not going to play no matter what. That's all I was getting at that every school has those, and small schools have just hope it isn't alot.
And yes, I do agree with you about those parents..
Dont' forget the one sport trend now as well. IF a parent thinks their kids is going to get a scholarship playing another sport. They may opt out of football as well not to get hurt. You have more of that now that it used to be.

You are right, but I do know of parents that believe that have the 1% child. And he must focus his time on this sport to get there.
And I am sure you do too.

Two points for that, 1. college coaches love multi-sport athletes, I've never heard tell a kid they are recruiting to stop playing another sport. 2. and mor importantly, availabilty of athletic scholarships are a myth. There are a very, very select few, especially at smaller schools, who ever get athletic scholarship money. Some D1 and fewer D2 kids get schoalrship, and D3 there is none. A few NAIA schools do, but my point is that it's just not a viable way to look at the future.
Across all levels, only 3% of student-athletes will receive some form of athletic scholarship. Do the math and it's mind-boggling.
