School opts out of games with Beavercreek, Centerville, adds Canfield, Toledo Waite
Sidney High School’s football schedule next season will include a new opponent, Canfield, in place of Beavercreek, it was announced recently.
Sidney was scheduled to play Beavercreek in week five in 2014 and 2015, but neither school was excited about playing the other. The disparity in the size of the schools was a factor. In fact, Sidney athletic director Mitch Hoying said that ultimately, the teams in the Greater Western Ohio Conference North, including Sidney, Piqua, Troy, Greenville, Vandalia and Trotwood, are not going to play many of the teams from the Central, which includes the mega-enrollment schools like ‘Creek, Centerville, Northmont, Wayne, Fairmont and Springfield.
Beavercreek and Sidney took advantage of the mutual opt out clause in the GWOC scheduling. Hoying said the league will soon be switching to individual opt out, meaning a school can back out of a game without the consent of the other school.
In this case, Hoying said, it was a mutual agreement between Sidney and Beavercreek. However, Sidney was planning to play Beavercreek in the coming season, and then opt out of the 2015 game.
“Inititially, we were just looking to get out for 2015,” said Hoying. “Beavercreek landed a game with (Dayton) Dunbar, but Dunbar told Beavercreek it had to be next season too, and not just 2015.”
Hoying said Sidney jumped on the idea of not playing Beavercreek next season either, even though Hoying said he didn’t have many positive leads to fill that date. “But we felt something would come up,” he said.
What came up was a game with Canfield High School, whose football team is Division III. The school is located east of Akron and is only an hour and 10 minutes from Pittsburgh. Sidney is nearly four hours away from Canfield.
Hoying described Canfield as “kinda like St. Marys.”
The game will be played on a Friday night, then the freshman and junior varsity teams will play each other the following morning, starting at 8:30. After all the football is over that day, the Sidney football players will visit the Pro football Hall of Fame in Canton.
“The Vespa Quarterback Club stepped up and will pay for charter busses,” said Hoying. “Canfield will provide a meal or two, and the (Sidney) Football Moms are also going to help.”
Hoying said the Pro Football Hall of Fame was contacted and told that the team was planning a visit, but that there were two football games to be played before they could make the trip. He said Hall of Fame officials told them they would stay open an hour later to give the Sidney players enough time to see the exhibits.
“Two things came together to make this all possible,” Hoying said. “One, Beavercreek was willing to work with us. And two, with the financial resources of Vespa and the Football Moms, this thing came about with no cost to the athletic department.”
There was still the question of filling the 2015 open date, however. And Sidney also chose to opt out of their scheduled games with Centerville in 2016 and 2017.
“Centerville was looking to play somebody else that will generate a few more computer points,” Hoying said.
So filling not only the open date in 2015, but also taking the place of Centerville the following two seasons, will be Toledo Waite, which will play in Sidney in 2015 and 2017, and host the Jackets in 2016. Waite is a D-II school and plays in the Toledo Public League.
“Both these teams (Canfield and Waite) will win four to seven games a year, and both have enrollments similar to ours,” Hoying said. “We think they are good matchups as far as on the field, and we were able to keep our home-and-home dates consistent.”
Hoying also announced that Sidney will play Xenia, of the GWOC South, in both 2016 and 2017.
“Football is sewed up through 2017,” Hoying said

No surprise here. Sidney, with a enrollment of 407 boys, just isn't in a position to compete with GWOC Central schools that share enrollment numbers upwards of 1,000 boys. Canfield will be a haul for the team, but it's nice to see Vespa and the Football moms step up to make it a nice trip for the team at no cost to the schools. Waite looks to be a good fit for Sidney. I am surprised they would do a 2 for 1, but it's a good deal for Sidney

Yeah the "reserved" section on the home side have backs. I forget how many exactly. I think from the 30 yard line to the 30 yard line.

There is plenty of parking around the field. If it's really packed, it might require a walk from the front of the school. Piqua has more seating at the moment. I think the one thing that makes this stadium unique from Alexander Stadium in Piqua from a fans perspective is that there is no track around the field. Everyone is closer to the action.
