I guess I didn't know there was even CYO teams around. YOu mean kids are playing on CYO teams in front of a dozen people (family and friends) instead of playing for their school, in front of hundreds from their community??

Is CYO more pick up ball with no practices and little structure? Just show up and play?

Ottoville no team? That is horrible. I do not understand how this is possible. Had no clue this was an issue. Sad.

Hold on guys before you lose your pants, Ottoville has a varsity team this year just not a JV team.

Basically, yes.

From what I am hearing and seeing at Ottoville over the years is kids just taking the easy way out. CYO just simply requires you to show up to religion every Wednesday, go to practice once or twice a week (involving mainly scrimmaging and shoot arounds), and basically no strategic plan during the game. I've seen some really good talent stop going out for high school ball and play CYO. To me I feel that's emberassing for the school. It's not just Ottoville either, Kalida, Fort Jennings, Miller City, etc. People want to blame the coach because of this but I feel it's more of the kid. I mean come on, if you don't like the coach, grow up and get over it. If you like the sport that much you will play. Personally I would like them to get rid of CYO in smaller schools. You can't have more kids going out for CYO than High School, that's just not right.

I agree with your statement above. These kids need to play ball whether they like the coach or not. They need to play for the love of the game. I sure hope this problem gets solved.

I don't disagree with the above statement but at the same time why isn't there a mass exodus of players not running track, playing baseball, or playing soccer? Also, I know that the total number of students are low at Ottoville but they didn't have a problem with numbers under their old coach.

Once again, not blaming the new coach just wandering why all of a sudden very few want to play basketball at Ottoville?

One last thing; the girls program at Ottoville is one of the best in the state in Division IV. These girls are growing up in the same families/environment as the boys are. The girls seem to want to put the time and work into the program to be successful, I would think the boys would be also under the right circumstances.

HRC,finally someone who "gets it" The mass exodus should be eye opening at both Ottoville and Miller City.
Venom, would you work for someone who belittled you, called you worthless day in and day out or would you go in search of a job where your talents were appreciated? And these kids don't get paid... Why shouldn't sports at this level be both challenging and fun? Getting rid of CYO doesn't solve your problems. These kids need an outlet. Getting rid of CYO just takes away from the kids who want to play but may not have as much talent as the next kid. I do not believe for an instant that these kids are lazy. Coaches should be role models not drill sergeants.

All coaches coach the game in a different manner but every coach should have the kids best interest at heart. But if the situation is that bad then somebody needs to step up and be heard. The kids only get one shot at a high school career and it shouldnt be ruined by a coach. I wish the school luck and i hope the situation is resolved.

Stop blaming the coach for your problems in Ottoville. When he was at Grove just 2 years ago no one was complaining about him their. It's sad that he left a successful program to go home and coach in his home town and isn't getting the support from the kids and some on the community. Someone needs to tell these kids to suck it up and put in some hard work. Instead of taking the easy way out and playing CYO.

CYO should be viewed as an "intramural" program for kids (who can't play on the high school team) to have a place to play, not replace high school ball. Secondly, the taxpapers in these communities pay for the school, gym, an athletic programs, so why how any school could not get kids to play is beyond me. This also leads to easier consolidation in the furture. ONe of the main reasons against consolidation is the opportunites of extracurriculars.

Agreed McClane! I can not believe Turnwald would change his philosophy or approach to coaching just because he switched schools.

Looks like Ottoville "boys" are soft and cant handle tough love, what a embarrassment. Coach Turnwald is a good coach. Maybe the boys can be cheerleaders for the girls team.

What?
Ottoville not liking a tough coach?
Let's hope Kalida don't get wind of this. Looking for the next heir to the throne.

Actually getting rid of CYO would solve part of the problem. It may not actually get kids to play high school ball, but it at least shows discipline and strict action meaning if you want to play basketball, you will play high school. I do agree though about the CYO thing in your last few sentences. CYO should be there for an outlet (for the kids that don't make the team or just don't have as much talent as the next kid). But this is not the case BUCKEYESROCK. In the last 7-8 years or more, I have seen good talent quit high school ball and play CYO. There is no reason for a small school like Ottoville to have 2 CYO teams. People always want to blame the coach if kids don't wanna go out. I think some often exagerrate about how strict a coach gets, one kid may think he is a drill sargeant while the other kid doesn't think that way. I want to play for a coach that wants to win, wants the best of me and pushes me to make me better. I think kids are just too soft and lazy these days, bottom line.

Your talents are appreciated where-ever you go---some just want you to be able to bring your talents to the fullest. Are kids going to be pushed to bring out their best talents when being coached by a part time 20 something year old coach at the CYO level? Or will their talents be brought out more by a dedicated experienced coach at the high school varsity level?

If Kalida goes 15-7 Coach K will be ohio high school coach of the year. Probably be very lucky to win half of that.
