Ain't no doctor coming anywhere close to the boys with a sharp instrument yet. I'd like to have a kid or two first.

hadn't really thought about it to tell the truth........

actually it's not on my "bucket list" either
to anyone who has went through this procedure........a few questions are in order
1. does it hurt?
2. do they put you to sleep?
3. do they pull a Barney Fife on you?.........("nip it, nip it, I'm telling you Andy you've got to nip it in the bud!")
4. what happens afterwards?

Although I never had it done, I have heard that this is the number one week of the year for this procedure. I have heard afterwards you just lay around with a bag of frozen peas placed you know where while you are cheering on your favorite team. :pickles:

I had this idea a few years ago. Went to Dr. He informed my I'm in the 95%tile for YOU KNOW :pickles: and the surgery would take approx 5 hours :furious: and the resulting pain would be huge, but more importantly the loss to humanity would be a tragedy. :crybaby:

4. what happens afterwards?

1. At the time it doesn't hurt much at all but the next day and later that night it hurts enough. At the time the worst is the anesthetic and then you feel some tugging.
2. No- a local anesthetic.
3. The Dr. and the nurse were having an ordinary conversation when I got mine. They chatted thru the entire process like one would expect 2 co-workers to do.
4. I got mine done on a Friday a few years ago. The next week I had some time off because it was near Christmas time. Anyway- I sat around the house all day Friday and Saturday with a couple bags of frozen peas on the crotch area. I went to Mass on Sunday morning- that might not have been a good idea. I should add that Friday and Saturday I stayed in our bedroom away from the children. Didn't need any accidental contact. Sunday I sat in the easy chair and the frozen peas were off and on.... Monday was about 80% pain free.

I went back in and got tested to make sure there were no swimmers about 3 or 4 weeks later.

I have never understood why a man would want this done? If the wife wants no more children, let her take care of it. After all it is her body bearing the children.

And.......there's no pain for either one!!

A lot of men don't want it done. They buckle under pressure from their wives.

Costs and risks. Vasectomy's are a lot cheaper and are outpatient procedures. Not the case when tying tubes.

Well..... I think its very selfish on the wifes part. A vasectomy cannot be reversed. Tieing of the tubes can be reversed. Also a
women can get her tubes tied right after the birth of her last child. I really have never even hear of any risks at all getting tubes tied!!

i tend to agree with this for the most part, as because of Roe vs. Wade; therefore take responsibility for the happenings to ypur own body & life you produce~or not....

but, as mo has pointed out, insurance-wise, lots cheaper..... also, the female reproductive system is a lot more complex, therefore, also lends itself to more possible complications.....

not sure where selfish lends itself to this conversation when, if a married couple, then it should be an agreed/mutual subject....both coming to a conclusion best to fit their family......
*also, btw, both procedures these days are reversible.......

i think many variables could exist for every couple or individual..... age (not all partners are of like age), previous 'reproductive organ' problems (especially for the female), health, in general, size of family already (we certainly see plenty of women AND men who've 'parented' children & can't support the ones already in existance!), etc, etc, etc, ....... the list could go on & on.....

i just think to automatically list the woman as being selfish a bit unfair as there can be numerous reasons (many more than the few i've listed) why a couple could also choose the man to have the vasectomy done instead....

Anesthesia is risky. Don't need it to get snipped, you do to get tubes tied. More risks in that alone.

Sorry Slice, we wll have to agree to disagree on this one. I stick by my "selfish" thought on the matter. I know of a couple where the wife with held ###### till her husband had the deed done. "she" was not taking any more chances of having another child. And as wilco said allot of men buckle
under pressure. If a women is putting pressure on her man to get this done.....sorry, it's spells selfish in my book! Due to my hearing loss I have had a number of surgeries going under anesthesia. Never ever had a problem.

Anesthesia is risky.

Anything is risky when it involves life. I've been under anesthesia more times than I care to count, and I've never had an issue. Mind you, that was for shunt implantation and three revisions, plus a hernia, and two of those operations were before I'd even turned a year old, when medicine was far, far more risky than it is now.

This issue may or may not come up in my marriage, and if it does, we'll lay out all the options and come to a rational decision. Lord knows, though, that procreation could be pretty difficult for us, anyway. If that's the case, we'll pursue other avenues.

Okay, I can now see who I'm arguing with. You two go ahead and ignore medical research that has proven time and time again that going under the gas is riskier than a local anesthetic. Sure you survived it many times Wilco, but will your wife? Will mine?

OSU4me - My wife and I agreed that we do not want any more children. We looked into our options. We went with Minera for a temporary (5 years) solution until we were certain we were done. Since then, we've agreed it's time to find a permanent solution since birth control medications increases risk of stroke. We explored our options. A vasectomy is the most economical and is PROVEN safer than my wife getting her tubes tied. My wife and I make babies, not just her. To even imply that she's selfish for OUR decision for me to go get snipped is obtuse. Wouldn't I be selfish to refuse a vasectomy and tell her that since she's the baby carrier and I'm merely the baby maker that she needs to be the one to take on a riskier surgery? (Again, medically proven to be riskier.)
