If you are talking about the tall girl she wasn't very good. I think she was just there to scare us with her height. It worked on me but fortunately not on the girls, lol

Rams anticipate 1st league crown
Rogers hopes to keep CL tradition

Although the City League has less than half the members it had last season with the departure of seven schools, an emerging girls basketball team at Rogers hopes to keep an impressive streak alive this season.
The CL has sent a team to the state final four in Columbus for four straight seasons, with former league member Central Catholic reaching in 2008, Start making it in 2009 and again last spring, and Waite advancing in 2010.
Start and Waite were state runners-up in 2009 and 2010.
As for second-year Rogers coach Lamar Smith, who studied those teams while they blazed their tournament trails, he noted what it took to get there.
Assemble the talent, work hard during the season and in the offseason, and line up a challenging non-league schedule to raise the level of play.
The youthful Rams, featuring a freshman-dominated lineup a year ago, reached the CL playoffs during a 17-6 season, then made their own strong tournament run in Division II.
Rogers won three tourney games last season before falling 46-44 to Lima Bath in a district final at Paulding.
Smith hopes the Rams were only just getting their feet wet as one of Ohio's future top teams.
"We can't sneak up on anybody anymore," Smith said. "These girls have a year's experience under their belt and we have some transfers in. So, we've got some senior leadership now.
"The keys will be just keeping the girls working hard every night, and not getting caught up in the pressure of it. Also, staying consistent and staying healthy, playing great defense and playing together as a team."
As he prepares his team for their season-opener Saturday night against three-time defending D-II state champion Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown, Smith keeps things in perspective.
The first order of business will be to try to win Rogers' first City League basketball championship -- boys or girls.
The Rams seem a safe bet to do just that, especially to league coaches, who unanimously voted Rogers (36 points) to win the CL in a preseason poll.
Defending champion Start -- which has been massively overhauled by graduation, an injury, a transfer, and a coaching change -- was picked to place second with 25 voting points, followed by Waite (23).
The first hurdle Smith will have to clear was one in his own house. Sophomore daughter Jasmyne, a starting Rams guard who averaged 14.5 points per game as a freshman, tore an ACL last month at a showcase event. She has surgery on Monday and will miss the entire season.
The cupboard though is far from bare at Rogers. The Rams' other four starters -- senior forward Ka'Bria Walker, junior Cha'Ron Sweeney, and sophomores Sasha Dailey and Toriana Easley -- all return, as do four experienced subs, led by 6-foot-1 sophomore Marquelle Williams.
Rogers also expects to have two prominent transfers join the roster in 6-4 Xavier University-bound Ce'Dra Evans, who comes over from Start, and Briaunna Nix, who averaged 11 points and 6.6 rebounds at Springfield last year. Evans has joined the squad, but Nix has yet to be cleared to play by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
Here is a look at the teams in predicted order of finish:
ROGERS
Coach: Lamar Smith, second season
Last season: 17-6 overall, 8-2 CL
Top players: Seniors Ka'Bria Walker, 6-0, F; Ce'Dra Evans, 6-4, C. Junior Cha'Ron Sweeney, 5-3, PG. Sophomores Sasha Dailey, 5-8, G; Toriana Easley, 5-11, F; Marquelle Williams, 6-1, F.
Outlook: Rogers' goal of becoming the school's first City League basketball champion (boys or girls) may be only a formality. Smith's Ram girls seem to have the talent market cornered, even without the services of his daughter, sophomore standout Jasmyne Smith (14.5 points last season), who had underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL.
The long and short of it is that the 6-4 Evans, who played on Start's 23-3, CL-champion and Division I state semifinal team last season, rejoins the 5-3 Sweeney (15.9 points, 4.6 assists), who played for the Spartans her freshman season before transferring to Rogers last year.
In between on the height chart, the Rams are simply loaded.
Dailey, who led Rogers to a state runner-up finish in Division II track last spring, is the Rams' go-to player on the court as well. She averaged 17 points and 3.9 rebounds as a freshman. The relentless Walker (6.1 points, 6.9 rebounds) is a force in the paint, and Easley will likely fill much of the statistical void left by Smith's injury along with Williams (5.3 rebounds).
Rogers will also count on production from three proven subs -- senior Kaylah Harris, junior CharAnna Caldwell, and sophomore Keyanna Austin.
How do the Rams measure up statewide?
Dailey, Sweeney, Smith, Evans, and Williams are all rated by the ESPN Hoopgurl Web site, and each, along with Easley, are receiving D-I college recruiting interest, according to coach Smith. The Rams have size, experience, depth, balance and, according to Smith, maturity and an unselfish nature. When pressed, the only trouble area the coach could think of was filling the lineup void left by his daughter's injury.
"Our goal is to win our first City championship, and then to make a state run," coach Smith said. "The key is to use our speed, athleticism, and good size. We need to stay healthy, and continue to play our style of game, which is to attack."
START
Coach: Leon Kynard, first season
Last season: 23-3, 10-0
Top players: Senior Hannah Kynard, 5-5, G. Juniors De'Angela Hicks, 5-11, G-F; De'Shayla Mosby, 5-10, F; Jazz Bobo, 5-10, F; Torrie McDuffy, 5-7, G; Tayma James, 5-7, G.
Outlook: Just as Waite suffered massive losses to graduation after its state-runner-up finish in 2010, the Spartans face an even greater void entering this season on the heels of its second D-I state appearance last March.
Four-year starters and 2011 first-team All-Ohioans Maleeka Kynard and Azia Bishop are now at Ohio State and Kentucky, respectively. Guard Ariel Gaston is at New Hampshire, and fellow backcourt starter Keia McCarver has also graduated.
Two senior players who were expected to lead the Spartans this year will also not be on the Start roster. Jaymie Jackson, a standout three-year starter who will play at Memphis, suffered a torn ACL in summer basketball action and will miss the season. Ce'Dra Evans, a 6-4 center headed for Xavier, has transferred to Rogers.
On top of that, Leon Kynard, a Start assistant the past four seasons, succeeds Bob Brown as head coach.
Hicks (8.0 points, 6.0 rebounds) and Mosby bring the most experience and will be counted on to lead. McDuffy and James enter the season as transfers from Notre Dame.
Start will rely on defense and athleticism as it negotiates its transition, and the Spartans must find a way to overcome their youth, inexperience, and lack of proven depth.
"We'll have to be real scrappy," coach Kynard said. "Our defense will have to be our best offense. The key is going to be getting in the gym and practicing and making the girls better. We've been spoiled the last four years. But these girls will step up and get a chance to show what they can do."
WAITE
Coach: Manny May, 14th season
Last season: 6-13, 4-6
Top players: Seniors Marquia Fitch, 5-7, G; Catherine Craig, 5-7, G; Sinffiney Watts, 5-11, F. Juniors Kre'Ana Henry, 5-11, F; Kayla May, 5-4, G. Sophomore Taylor Works, 5-10, G-F.
Outlook: The Indians took a dip last season after its 2010 D-I state runner-up finish. Graduated were 6-3 All-American Natasha Howard, and guards Miriah Haynes and Courtney Jackson. Further, standout forward Shanice McNeal did not play last season.
Waite did some rebuilding, got better as the season progressed, and now look to bounce back and contend near the top of the CL.
Henry (9.0 points, 8.0 rebounds) will lead the way, as the Indians look to offensive and defensive post play along with rebounding as strengths. Coach May is concerned most with his team's consistency in execution at both ends.
"I expect them to compete for a City title and in the district," said May, whose Waite teams won four CL crowns (2005-07, 2010) in the past eight years. "The key will be for them to play as a team, execute, and work hard in practice."
BOWSHER
Coach: Louis Davis, third season
Last season: 8-12, 5-5
Top players: Seniors Asia Woodson, 5-5, G; Kortlynn Crayon, 5-5, G. Sophomores Katelyn Westhoven, 5-11, F; Celeste Wade, 6-0, C; Rachel Maurter, 5-7, G.
Outlook: The Rebels should contend with Start and Waite for the CL's runner-up spot, and will rely on perimeter shooting, quickness, and depth as strengths. Overall youth and inexperience may provide hurdles in their progress.
Woodson (17.3 points, 3.3 rebounds), the league's leading scorer last season, will again lead the Rebels with help from Crayon (5.5 rebounds).
"I'm very excited about this group," Davis said. "If we stay healthy we should be very competitive in the City League. The key will be our outside shooting and our post play."
SCOTT
Coach: Leon Washington, first season
Last season: 7-12, 2-8
Top players: Seniors Mercedes Finley, 5-6, G-F; Lora Jefferson, 5-1, G. Junior Erica Besteder, 5-4, G-F. Sophomores Basia Gary, 5-3, G; Jariesha Dillard, 5-2, G.
Outlook: The odds seem stacked against the Bulldogs as far as improving on last season's finish. Finley and Besteder are the lone returning starters, the team lacks size, and Washington, who was hired last month, has no prior high school coaching experience.
The new coach, who is a local YMCA program director, remains optimistic about his Bulldogs' prospects. He labels them as strong, physical and quick, and likes the way they "get after the ball." The lack of size will make rebounding and post defense difficult, and inexperience may also prove to be a hurdle.
"My outlook is very bright," Washington said. "We plan to be first or second in the City standings by the end of the season. The key is having a positive attitude and playing strong defense."
WOODWARD
Coach: Thom West, first season
Last season: 0-15, 0-10
Top players: Seniors Lexus Sullivan, 5-5, G; Tyesha Thomas, 5-3, G; Felicia Holley, 5-4, F; Jonika Hall, 5-7, F. Sophomore K'Shawna Barnett, 5-10, C.
Outlook: West, who spent 19 seasons as a boys basketball assistant under highly-successful Leroy Bates at Libbey, became a Woodward girls assistant last year. He steps into his first head coaching role with a huge challenge -- changing a culture of losing in the Polar Bear girls program, which includes just 19 total players, nine on the varsity.
Woodward posted its only two wins in 2009-10 over Maumee Valley, and went winless last year.
West has seen improvement in the work ethic and the girls' ability to play together as a team. He understands that the inexperience, low roster numbers, and lack of size will make being competitive difficult.
"The hardest thing is changing the atmosphere," West said. "Just winning one game would be a marked improvement. The biggest thing will be trying to put the girls into a winning frame of mind."
