The aforementioned student/athlete has had so many people "try" to build his character, only to have him "dump" on them.........................................I would expect the same will happen again...........................................and again........................................................................................

Could one assume this student-athlete may be a recent transfer to Elida because of some similar "character" issues from another WBL school?

and could one also assume this same student-athlete started out at a private elementary school but ended up changing to said WBL school for some of these same "character" issues?

Could be this particular "kid" was over-sized from kindergarten on. This sometimes creates problems for a "little" boy who is expected to act like a "big" boy. He rebelled, and has been rebelling ever since. Just a thought. :shrug2:

Sorry Owl, but I couldn't disagree with you more.

Athletes should be held to a higher standard than the regular student population. Kind of like the "good ole days" when you got punished at school, then got punished more at home. Athletes should face their academic punishment, and that should carry over to an athletic punishment as well. Kudos to any coach that will expect more from their athletes.

Also, while our primary job is to teach academics to the students in our classroom, you are sorely mistaken if you think we are not teaching them some "life lessons" (such as character) as well.

I believe the student in question has been an Elida student since the 6th grade who open enrolled to Shawnee and then using the home school rule transferred back to Elida without having to sit out a year. The student in question has been disciplined for two in-class incidents in the same way that any other student would have been disciplined with the added discipline of having to sit out games.

Most coaches have TEAM rules that are in addition to school regulations. Nobody defends coaches more than I do... But if the coach knew about this and still allowed him to play...I think this is an ethical lapse at least equal to that which the kid is accused.

The general philosophy is that the standards for somebody representing the school publicly are higher than the minimal standards set for the general student body. I have no problem with this. In fact I believe that enforcing more stringent rules/guidelines for those in the public eye is a commendable goal. Extracurricular activities are not a guarantee for every student. It is a more select group. Therefore, it is completely justifiable that a more stringent code should be enforced.

The question here is why did the Elida basketball program not enforce a more stringent code?

P.S. This all assumes that the cheating and/or stealing allegations and the corresponding time-lines are true. Hard to justify how a kid caught cheating gets a delayed punishment from the team. This demonstrates that the participation threshold for Elida basketball is glaringly low and apparently conditional too.
I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.

There was no delayed punishment. The student in question was treated exactly like any other student would have been treated.

We are talking about a kid. I remember when I was a kid and I made alot of dumb mistakes. Hard to believe but I did, I hope he learns from his mistake and grows from it.
