I have to ask......what's in the water in Elida?

This child’s life is more important than Elida’s basketball victory count. If the adults designed a system that kept these priorities in their rightful order, there would be no reason to have this discussion. It is currently the Elida District that is failing this child. But any system in which the adults/coaches/authority has juxtaposed their priorities would do the same. In that sense, this is a story of flawed societal priorities/expectations.

So hang on a second - Elida suspends the student from school (again), suspends him from games (again, and, as it sounds, exponentially more than the first time), and has probably done more that no one can really confirm or deny.. i.e. counseling, other disciplinary measures. How exactly have they failed him again? It seems to me they are TRYING to do something to better this individual. Ultimately, it ends up falling on that individual to accept the help and make a decision to begin an internal change...
I guess I don't quite understand why the Elida school system is being put to blame for some really dumb actions of students who happen to be athletes. They essentially took away athletics from those involved in the pizza incident, they are disciplining another young man for academic issues... exactly what else are they supposed to do?
I'd love to hear your thoughts. Should be absolutely rich, I'm sure...

what about where (i think) the real culpabilities are..... with the parents........and why hasn't anything been done there from those 'authorities' that are always asking for increasing levies to do their part to ensure youths' well-being?
btw, not attacking your post, ronny.....just expounding on what my thoughts are on this situation.

i wasn't referring to the school system, but rather, AC children services..... how is a 'kid' is in the court system this long and having continued 'issues' at school after school (not to mention criminal/legal) and they haven't stepped in since apparently those 'in charge' parents or otherwise (which i do believe to be the parents) aren't being effective?
i've had my own dealings with them with my own family members & to say the end result with their 'resolution' left a sour taste in my mouth is an understatement..... and my niece & nephew would attest to. <the kids, now adults, affected

A quick thread review will reveal that it is I who advocated the position that Elida would/should administer "exponential" punishment this time. I was taken to task by some for holding this position. My responses are directed toward those who did not believe exponential punishment was fair or realistic.

I agree they are trying and applaud them for doing so. As stated above, my responses are directed toward those who felt exponential punishment was unfair or unrealistic.

Correct... It is also correct that the school makes the decision about who will and will not represent their program in extracurricular activities. So far, it would appear Elida is trying to send a strong message to this child in hopes of helping him adjust to societal norms.

They are not. If you read this thread in its entirety you will see that my responses are hypothetical based upon those who felt Elida should not provide exponential punishment. Given the fact that Elida has apparently decided to fulfill their educational mission, any hypothetical criticism is null and void.

If by rich you believe that stealing and cheating are wrong, a child's development is more important than basketball victories, educator's should place the individual child's interest over their own ego gratification, and punishment should be of significant magnitude to change deviant behavior...then your sweet tooth should ache no more.

There are two reasons he ended up at Elida. 1] Shawnee said goodbye/dont come back 2] During summer before jr year Elida BB was skirting the edge of recruiting the kid. He couldnt get along with new Shawnee BB staff. Many believe he would of not took the path he did at shawnee to the level he did [resulting in removal] without the feeling he had a backup plan of playing basketball at Elida. If Elida admin would be honest, they never wanted him because they realized to potential for issues-- go figure. But, whatever it takes to add a needed part for sports.
