After reading the Lima News recently, I saw some coaches are winning their 300th, 400th and 500th games respectively. I was wondering if there were any young coaches in the area, whether currently coaching a Varsity, JV, and/or Freshmen team that has some of the qualities to be a great coach and possibly be the next Bob Arnzen (DSJ), Dick Kortokrax (Kalida), Joe Petrocelli (Kettering Alter) or Steve Williman (L-B )?

Jeremy Best-Crestview. Great young coach with a great staff in a great community dedicated to student athletes. Basketball tradition with great feeder programs. Consistent winner. He has been a great fit there........has been good for the school and good for him.

I believe Kirk Lehman is getting close to 300. Everytime they say his overall record on the radio I seem to miss the exact total, but I'm wanting to say it's over 280.

Really Ty Mac already. I know the school system and some others from OG have anointed him the chosen one there as soon and even before he left college. But his resume is still not that great. Not many years coaching and not really anything impressive. I'm not saying he won't be a great coach but it's crazy the way he is hyped into this great coach. Just because he has a big name doesn't make him this great coach

The question was a young coach with some of the qualities to be great, if you can't see he has that then you don't know him well enough to speak for or against him. His resume is starting pretty good I think, first year coaching he took a team to regionals, the second year districts and now he's at OG. What did he need to do to impress you, take a team to state already, he was one game away his first year. I do agree he does have a big last name....McGlaughlin, I wouldn't want to write that big of a last name :P

My bad about the district. I still think the question was "a young coach with the qualities to be great, JV or varsity" and most believe he does have those qualities. Why wouldn't the school/community be excited to have him. He was born and raised there, surrounded by a great coaching staff, teaches in the school, and has a great knowledge of the game, all reasons to support someone in my opinion. And the name thing, give me a break.

Todd Turnwald as FJ JV coach was great... As CG varsity coach was great.. Now he has Ottoville.. If he gets Ottoville to come around he will be a big name in 10 - 15 years

I agree with Vermillion and Sensabaugh. Both great coaches and well respected.

The thread's original question was who has the qualities to be a great coach and it also seems to speculate who might be a 300/400 win type of "legend" in the future.

Coach Mac at OG has "some of the qualities" and very obviously the opportunity to put up a lot of wins.

- school has great basketball tradition - check
- young guy that could be here for decades - check
- stable job situation allowing him to stay indefinately - check
- family lives in the area, likely keeping him at this job - check
- good staff around him - check

This young man has about 30 or so years to go before retirement, and could coach for 10-20 more after he gets out of teaching.
if he has a good career.

OG has averaged 19 wins/year over the last 15 years. Granted, there has been some amazing talent that is a bit lacking now, but even 15 wins/year gets a coach 350-400 wins here in 25 years.

Definate potential 400 win coach. And that's what the thread was about.

Not sure OG is all that stable of a job. I mean granted it has been a very long time since any coach has been let go in ottawa but that's because they have had so many great coaches and teams in their existence. I could see where if Ty doesn't produce like the last three coaches OG have had he will be let go relatively soon in his tenure.

Can't see him surviving 10-15 years at Ottoville, might not be around next year.

I see the HS coaching ranks going the way of the college coaches. If you have a couple of bad seasons you will be gone no matter how good of a coach you may be. The sports world for good or bad has become one of short term memory and the feeling of what did you do for me this year. That along with player and parent entitlement will make any coaching job seem overwhelming at times. With that being said I think it will be hard for any coach to last decades at a school like they have in the past.

O-G seems to put up 13 wins minimum in a down year(like this year). As long as Tyson wants to stay around(can't see him leaving) and the fans continue to support them(they seem smart enough to know when talent is down, and they don't seem to lose support over a random 13-10 season here and there), then he's got huge potential.
