The second installment of "Questions From The 'Corner" features Mike Mauk. Enjoy.
by Kevin Oberhaus
1. What is your greatest accomplishment as a head coach?
Hopefully, having a some positive influence on the young people I am have the
fortunate to work with.
2. First Ben, now Maty. Both set national records. How does that make you
feel as a Father and as a Coach?
It has and always will be about finding a way to help our team win and be successful as a team. One of
the reasons I have enjoyed being a high school coach is that it allowed me to spend time with my family. We have been blessed to be surrounded by so many good players and outstanding Assistant Coaches, with a
community that has been supported our program.
3. With great expectations come great pressure. How has your team been able to handle both, being a preseason State Championship favorite?
It is not something we have control over. Our number one goal was to have a winning season. Our number two goal was to win the Western Buckeye League Championship. So our primary goals have been reached. Now, we are one of 16 teams still playing in our division. You always need to be focused on the game your playing and that is what we are doing.
4. What was the biggest question mark coming into this season and how have you answered it?
Our biggest concern was replacing some outstanding football players that graduated last year. We started 9 new players on offense our first game. Our senior players have not only played well for us but they have also been tremendous leaders for our team.
5. How do you stop Kyle Nutter and the Genoa wing t?
I don't think you can stop him or their offense. They are exceptionally talented and very good. Kyle Nutter is the best all-around back we have seen. He has speed, power, elusiveness and athleticism. He is a tough kid. He is not the only player that have like that. Our hope is to slow him down as much as we can and keep him from having too many big plays. Their offense can also hurt you in many different ways. Their quarterback throws a nice pass and they have guys who can catch it. Mike Vicars is an outstanding coach. He has had tremendous success wherever he has coached. We know this is going to be a tough, difficult game for us.
6. What are some similarities of what Wellington did on offense and what Genoa does on offense?
They both like to run the football.
7. What makes your version of the spread different then others and hard to defend? How would you defend your offense?
I am not sure on both of those questions. We run what we think will help our team be most
successful. I guess we pass the ball more out of the spread than most teams.
8. Who do you pattern your offense after or most closely resembles?
Our offense continues to evolve with the talent and abilities of our players. I don't know that we try to simulate what anybody else does.
9. After looking a film, how do you feel Genoa stacks up to the rest of your schedule?
Genoa is as good as anybody we have ever played. They are an outstanding football team.
10. What is your philosophy on onsides kicks and when to use them?
It varies depending on how the game is being played and the situations at the time
.
