What do you think is the correct answer??

Order of operations says you multiply/divide before add/subtract. So the 1x0 at the end is 0. Then it becomes 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1-1+1+1+1+1+1+0. Which equals 14.

I disagree....but, I barely passed Algebra II, so I sure ain't no math wizz!!! lol

I came up with my guess 'cause of what you alluded to, dhs... "anything x's 0=0" at the end...but, i do recall somnething about 'order of operations'.... rolleyes.gif dry.gif

No. Order of operations still stands without the parentheses. The 1x0 at the end is done first.

Slice - Your answer is correct........0. Order of operations says solve anything inside the parenthesis first, which doesn't apply in this problem. Then multiply, from left to right. The multiplication problem thus becomes:1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1 x 0 >>>17 x 0 = 0. You can't arbitrarily pick where you want to start the multiplication problem....you have to start from the left and go to the right. Anything times 0 is 0. Let's ######ume that the question is posed like this: 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1 x 1 >>>>17 x 1 = 17. 17 x 1 and 17 x 0 can not be the same value...and they are not.

I googled Order of operations and this is what I found .....In mathematics and computer programming, the order of operations (sometimes called operator precedence) is a rule used to clarify unambiguously which procedures should be performed first in a given mathematical expression.

For example, in mathematics and most computer languages multiplication is done before addition; in the expression 2 + 3 × 4, the answer is 14. Brackets, which have their own rules, may be used to avoid confusion, thus the preceding expression may also be rendered 2 + (3 × 4), but the brackets are not required as multiplication still has precedence without them.

Any Math teachers on here???

Nope....I still say it's zero. When doing the multiplication you have to find the value to the left of the "x" and then multiply that times 0. No matter what the value is, anything times zero is zero. Didn't mean to confuse you 4me, just 'cause I live in a state of confusion is no reason to drag you along with me!! smile.gif

If I can find some AAA batteries I'll plug this into my old scientific calculator. A normal calculator will come back 0, but those aren't programmed to take order of operations into affect at all. So whatever the scientific one says is what I'd believe is right.

Just have to find those damn batteries lol.


Searched for a scientific calculator online (Web 2.0 scientific calculator) and plugged it in. It says 14.
