Defiance did go to state in 2002, but I'd still say there's a monkey on your back when you win your district 13 times but only make it to state twice.

Justin,
You might recall that coach Held took Defiance to Columbus and lost 1-0 in the semi-final game in Billingsley's junior season.

You're right. I should've said no state titles, not no state appearances.

Hopefully they'll be able to change the no state titles under Held thing this year. Although if not, at least they broke the recent district final curse in a big way.

Looks like the other coach Held made it to Columbus again this year. Amazing that two teams from Cincinnati somehow aren't in the same regional. Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller played a team with a losing record in their regional final.

Very tough task for Defiance having to face 32-0 Jonathan Alder, then powerhouse Walsh Jesuit in the finals.

Might try to make it down to Columbus this weekend to watch the Bulldogs. Enjoy the stadium, it is sweeeeet!

I saw Alder's schedule somewhere and it plays a lot of Division I teams and several teams (in several divisions) that made it to the district final or farther in the tournament. Defiance will have to play its best game of the year to win this game.

I hope Defiance can get it done but you can be sure that any teamed played at this level will take advantage of and defensive mistakes. I am hoping to make the trek to Columbus on Saturday to watch the dogs. I'm assuming that the dogs will pitch their ace on Friday. I want to see some of the other hardworking pitchers get some well deserved attention. I don't care what the Crescent News says. It takes more than two players to take a team to Columbus.,

You are correct - nwo - It takes more than two - however the media only sees what they want to see.

The entire team deserves credit - nothing is bigger than the program as they say.

Next they will say it is only the seniors....no respect of the underclassmen that work just as hard through the entire season.

Sometimes the underclassman h ave to work harder. You are right. The entire team deserves credit. I wish the media would stop promoting unhealthy competition and start promoting team. TEAM is the only way any team has a shot at winning a title. I wonder how the anonomous players and their families feel about the recent articles in the CN. I have read about sacrifices families have made so their kid could play baseball, blah, blah, blah. Let me tell you, that is not news. That is how it is for any player at this level and their families. Baseball is a way of life. This may not mean much from an old baseball guy, but congratualtions bulldogs! I know how hard ALL OF YOU worked to get where you are.

Give me a break. The newspaper usually does feature stories on only seniors. When the underclassmen are seniors, they'll get their chance to have the glory of an article written about them - which I hope they aren't worrying about anyway.

I'm as much for team as the next guy, and I love to see the little guys get attention too, but don't give me this "don't promote unhealthy competition" thing. If players inside a team aren't allowed to compete with each other, how's the team supposed to get better? If a guy is playing, let's just say center field, and there's NO ONE behind him pushing him for playing time, do you really think he's going to go all out for 7 innings every game? It's just human nature. When you know your job is safe, you're going to get complacent. Competition is never a bad thing.

I agree with you on that. I used the term competition incorrectly. I guess I should have said putting "yourself before the team." For example, I have seen pitchers that don't really care what happens unless they are pitching. They worry about their stats and that's it. I will never disagree that healthly competition is a good thing. Thank you for allowing me to clarify. Also, I agree that everyone gets their chance to be a senior. The only thing I really take exception to is that two guys, no matter who they are, can be responsible for taking a team to that level. That is what takes away from TEAM.

So nwobaseballfan from your recent post you're stating that the only time that Dace cares about the team if when he's pitching???????????????

If you really feel that way, I can give you the phone number to him and his mother and they will straighten out that perception. I know that Dace has been brought up in a team environment. His grandmother was a coach for 26 years, his grandpa coached football, basketball, baseball and has umpired baseball for 42 years. His step-father has coached football and his mom coached girls basketball at Defiance.

The kid is grounded to say the least...........

Plus we're happy with the TEAM aspect as it was kinda a downer during basketball season. And you can look at the posts in the basketball forum if you have questions on that. The boys have practiced and played together since little league, and they're all having fun as a team.

It looks like a lot of these former Little League parents are doing their thing at the High School level now.

Sorry if I struck a nerve. I wasn't specifically referring to "Dace" or any other Defiance player for that matter. My boys have been out of ball for years. I go to games throughout the area. We are not in the Defiance district. I just love baseball. Good luck, Bulldogs!

You are so right with this statement, Knuckles!! If Defiance had played as a TEAM in EVERY game, they would not have lost one game during their basketball season, and they just might have made it to State!! TEAM is so very, very important. If a player can make his teammates look good, the wins will come. Dace DEFINITELY understands this concept. We will be praying and keeping our fingers crossed and everything else superstitious - in order for our Dawgs to win!! Best of luck and can't wait until 4:00 p.m. tomorrow~!~ and PLEASE don't let it rain!! hifive2.gif
