Bloomdale: The Elmwood Royals got off to a rough start this season. They struggled to a 1-5 record including a big loss to Genoa.

Since that start, the Royals have streaked to 7 wins in 8 games. And with tonights victory over Genoa, Elmwood sits with just 2 Suburban Lakes League losses. Just 1 game behind Eastwood and Otsego.

The Royals used a full court press right from the tip to rush the Comets into 6 firs quarter turnovers. Those TO's led to a 12-2 Royal lead in the first 3 minutes. But Genoa answered right back with its own 12-2 run to tie the score at 14 after 1 quarter.

The second quarter showed more Elmwood press and more Genoa turnovers. 6 more TO's led to an 8-0 Royal run to open the period. This time the Royal defense didn't let up this time as they powered on 9-4 to close out the quarter. Elmwood enjoyed a 31-18 lead at the break.

Elmwood shot 11-23 for the half including 4 threes and committed just 6 turnovers. Mike Huettner led the Royals with 7 points. Reid Rothenbuhler and TJ Waldock added 6.

Genoa shot an impressive 8-13 but had 12 turnovers in the half. Richard Wonnell paced the Comets with 8 points. Matt Bassitt added 7.

Elmwood came out of halftime and picked up righ where they left off. They streaked out to a 19 point lead at 43-24 with 3 minutes left in the 3rd. Now it was Genoa's turn to make a run. The Comets outscored the Royals 10-0 to close the quarter. Bringing them to within 9 at 43-34.

A small run of 5-2 for Elmwood and 5-2 for Genoa showed the score of 50-41 with 3:41 left. That the closest the Comets would get as Elmwood closed the game with a 10-3 burst to give us our final score of 60-44.

Turnovers played a huge part in this game as both teams shot relatively well. Elmwood finished the game 22-42 from the floor, 4-11 from 3. Genoa shot 20-39, just 2-6 from 3. The Royals committed 11 TO's compared to the Comets 22.

Elmwood put 3 players in double figures. Huettner 13, Jay Hannah 13, and TJ Waldock 12. Adam Tyson had 7 steals and Rothenbuhler had 5.

Genoa had Bassitt with 17 and Wonnell with 14.

Elmwood(8-6,6-2) will travel to Pemberville to take on Eastwood(10-4,7-1) this Friday.
Genoa(8-6,4-4) has a non league game with Northwood (4-9) Friday.
