Surprised nobody started a thread on this.

I'm guessing everybody in the Lima area that attends HS basketball games knows these guys.

Agree with Seggerson?

I heard a couple years ago that they had a standing bet that whoever called the first foul of the night had to buy after the game.

Great story, thanks for sharing it. I officiated many years, over 35, had many experiences but did not work with the same guy that many times. About time we get some good officiating stories on this site.

It doesn't really matter how tight a game is called, consistency is the key. In fact, referees are supposed to let the offended player work thru the contact and not call the foul unless an advantage is gained by the offender. The biggest problem is the player who thinks he/she is more important than everyone else [ lack of discipline] and makes stupid decisions on the court. That is when being a referee is more difficult. Just saying.

How about when the official thinks he is more important than anyone else and feels the crowd is there to watch him!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You don't get that with these guys. I know plenty of others where it's all about them.

Quite a few "Pretty boys" as I like to call them.

Mangas, Trout and Derryberry - the 3 headed monster to avoid at all costs. In that order.

I think this article was written with the intent of recognizing two incredibly dedicated, veteran officials who do what they do for the right reasons........not as a thread to belittle certain officials.

Thanks Flounder, I retired from BB 6 years ago. I probably went a year too long. But we only had 2 officials then, not 3 like you do in Ohio. I think now they have 3 on boys only out here.

Bashing referees who go out there every night and provide a service gets us no where. If anyone can do better, I suggest you join the referee ranks. There are classes offered each fall to gain your license. It would be fun to critique some of you.
ON ANOTHER NOTE,
Mark my word. Unless there is an extreme effort by OHSAA to add to the referee ranks, there will be shortages. You will see varsity referees having to do jv also. THE PROPHET HAS SPOKEN!

The one and only "GREAT PROPHET" who graced this hollowed arena for years until I changed computers and I couldn't find anyone at RC to help me get to my old limajock password. LOL.
