Ed Sandy and Don Bridges played for the Phillies!

I could be mistaken but didn't both Sandy and Bridges play for Gomer. That would be considered Elida now, but back then they were two seperate schools.

Have not seen much in the Lima News but found Brooks Mohr on the Pulaski Mariners web page www.PulaskiMariners.net.
The Mariners are in 1st place and Mohr is leading in innings pitched 37.2 and in era for the starters 2.87.
In fact he is 8th in the league and making Limaland proud.

Also on the WBL front ... Defiance's John Niese was called up to the Mets AAA club this week.

May be closer to reality after yesterday ... Niese threw 7 in a 7-1 win. Billingsley goes all 9 and throws a shutout for Dodgers. Now 2nd in the NL in K's. WOW

Mets update ... Billy Wagner hit the DL today ... Niese had another good outing yesterday (Monday) ... and according to the Mets website, they are in need of a starter Saturday ... do we sense a call coming from the big show? And how about those Defiance pitchers! At this moment Billingsley is locked in a scoreless duel with the Cards and Chris Carpenter in the 5th.

I don't think he is on the major league 40-man roster, so technically he would have signed a minor league deal, not a major league one. That is a four year commitment to the Mariners organization before they would have to either put him on the 40-man roster or subject him to the Rule V draft. They could of course call him up before that.

If he stays healthy, he has a real shot at the majors. I hope he keeps his head on straight and makes it. He has had a good start, but he will probably not have a challenge until double-A. That should come in 2010. The first couple of years, he just needs to stay healthy and get in plenty of innings. the third year will be the most important year.

You are right Brentwood, AA seperates the men from the boys. At AA two thirds of all players drafted have been left behind, rookie, short season, low-A and high A with just AA and AAA remaining. If you can compete there you will play MLB somewhere some day. That is why Niese has a great chance of playing MLB this year or next. Mohr may be right behind and the WBL could have 3 MLB players at the same time, WOW! Mohr now has 5 wins for 2nd place in the Appalachian League.

ESPN 940 (The Koze) had Niese's agent on this morning. He said he took in a game last week where Brooks pitched. Said he looked good, was 5-2 with a low 2's ERA. He said scouts at the game told him Brooks was throwing 88-89, which they would like to see improve a few MPH, but that for a 19 year old not used to pitching so late in the summer, he was optimistic he would hit low 90's with more work (on mechanics I think). Also, he mentioned that the Mets hadn't named a starter for Wednesday as yet, and was hopeful that Niese may get the call-up this week. Niese had another quality start tonight 6 IP, 2 ER, 5H, 5 K, 1 BB and left after 6 ahead 3-2. He's 2-0 in AA (maybe 3-0 after tonight) with a 2.37 ERA. Billingsley goes tomorrow - he is still 2nd in the NL in K's and now up to 8th in ERA.

Chad Reineke from Ayersville was just called up a few weeks ago and has been pitching pretty well for the Padres. Billingsley is of course the most consistent pitcher the Dodgers have, and all indications are that Niese will be called up September 2nd with the Mets in need of a 5th starter down the stretch.

Also drafted this year from NW Ohio was Chris Carpenter from Bryan. He was drafted twice before, by the Tigers and Yankees, but each time he decided to continue pitching at Kent State. Now he's in the Cubs system.
