While that may be "a" reason, it's not a good one. You just had 22 games and 5 scrimmages to "get ready" for the tournament. I can't imagine many coaches look at it as just getting another W. If so, they are in it for the wrong reason. Finally, how about looking at it from the sportsmanship standpoint? I mean, does a 20-2 team beating up on a 2-20 team make any sense at all? Is this really what high school sports has come to?

I don't think they are good reasons either, particularly to add another win. But I have heard those as reasons from coaches (in confidence of course). The other reason I have heard is to get some JV/underclassmen tournament experience they likely won't get later in the tournament. I am not that surprised some coaches are playing these games given some of the scores I have seen in girls basketball this season.

Some coaches want that extra win for their personal W/L numbers. Also, some coaches want to get a "scrimmage" under their belts in a new gym before they face real competition. Tourney games (even blowouts) have a different atmosphere.

Ya but if you are the inferior team in that district, I don't think the different atmosphere part will have that much of an affect on you especially in that first game. Usually I see it in districts.

Don't get me wrong when I say this because I am on your side and agree about taking the bye especially for the sake of risking injury, but I leave the sportsmanship part out of it. Would parents, coaches or even kids at the high school level be that soft to think its unsportsmanlike? I mean we are talking about high school athletes not grade school kids. I don't think its unsportsmanlike if a team does not take the bye, I just think its foolish because they are taking a bit of a risk. Either like I said I completely agree with you on everything else here.

A lot of it seems to be a coach trying to go against the norm and look like the smartest guy in the room. If it takes one game against a 5 win team to "get ready for tournament".....what does that mean? Do you do anything different than any other game? I would think playing a tough regular season schedule with some games that have a tournament like atmosphere prepares a team more for the post season than a blowout against a vastly inferior opponent in a sectional game.

Ya thats what I am saying and plus what if one of your players gets hurt? First game of the tournament I don't think usually draws that tournament atmosphere in. At least for me it doesn't. The crowds are not as big, pressure and drama is not there yet. I think you are better off preparing yourself for tournament in practice than you are there. Either way its an interesting topic because I know coaches do it in soccer as well.
