Baker Connects Often as Junior Kicker Outscores Perkins Offense in Win

When doing my homework on these two clubs that met up in week six, I learned that both the weather and a healthy David Doster at Quarterback might have played a role in Sandusy Perkins 34-14 dominant regular season win on Clyde’s turf. The weather wouldn’t play a factor in their second go-around, but this time Doster was playing on an injury he suffered last week, and it wasn’t until they pulled him for the sophomore backup Matt Schweinfurth, when Perkins finally notched their first points late in the 4th.
Those would be Perkins only points of the night, and Clyde proved to be too much both on the ground and behind the leg of Austin Baker “the field goal maker”, who connected on four field goals which accounted for 12 of Clyde’s 19 points in a (19-6) win in Bellevue Friday evening.

To say that Clyde dominated up-front on Friday evening would be an understatement. The Fliers held Perkins to 9 plays in the first quarter on three, three-and-outs. Meanwhile, Baker connected on field goals from (28, 28, 32), and Clyde led (9-0) as they doubled the amount of plays Perkins was able to run in the first 12 minutes.

Perkins finally picked up a first down as we started the 2nd quarter, but would only move the chains one more time in the 1st half, as the Fliers stymied the Pirates in every facet of the game as they took a (9-0) lead into the break.

Following another three-and-out from Perkins, Clyde opened up their first possession of the 2nd half with an 8-play scoring drive, in which Baker connected on his third 28 yard field goal and fourth field goal of the night for a (12-0) lead. The drive was set-up arguably by Clyde’s top three players in (QB) Tim Hoppe as he hit fellow senior Derek Gray for 22 yards, and workhorse Damian Coburn churned his way through Perkins territory for 29 yards that helped with the 28-yard field goal score.

Following a couple of three-and-outs, Clyde attacked the Pirates defense through the air again, as Hoppe found Gray on a 33 yard strike, that set-up a Hoppe quarterback keeper around the left tackle for the Fliers first touchdown of the game and a (19-0) lead with 3:04 in the 3rd.

Perkins would come up with a couple of turnovers in the 4th quarter that would have them start in Clyde territory. However, the Pirates would turn the ball over themselves, as (Sr) and ailing David Doster threw two picks in as many drives. Defensive Back and (Jr) Eric Wiseman of Clyde would snatch both of those interceptions for the Fliers.

As the Perkins faithful started heading for the exits, this is when head coach Jason Ziegler put in his sophomore (QB) Matt Schweinfurth, and he scampered down the sidelines for 65 yards, for the Pirates only score of the night with 3:24 remaining in the game. Many fans left wondering what could have been, if they used their healthy backup the entire match. However, it probably wouldn’t have made a difference as Clyde dominated at the line of scrimmage and on the scoreboard to the tune of (19-6) Friday evening.
Clyde will live another week, as they take on Toledo Central Catholic next Friday. A team that finally showed they’re human in a 42-13 victory over Tiffin Columbian, in which they had just a one-score lead late in the 3rd quarter. The location of this game will be determined on Sunday.
