Now that we are in the third year of this rule (like it or not it's not going away) what changes if any would you make?

Mine would be.

1) clock will stop when a flag is thrown. Refs can limit action even more by simply throwing a flag for anything they want to call.

2) would rather see it run after 30+ points after the third quarter instead of @ halftime. Could do it at start of 2nd half if it's 40+ spread.

3) if teams agree to substitute out more than 75% of their starters, clock would go back to standard. Small rosters that may not be able to field a full jv team could get their younger kids some field time.

Discuss.

Agree it needs changed, especially the clock not stopping on penalties. Also think the clock should stop after a score and nor start again until the scoring team kicks off, not when ball is set. Witnessed the 3rd qtr end this week with the ball on the T and clock started with 15 sec left in qtr. Kicking team stood there allowing clock and qtr # 3 end

The clock is supposed to stop for possession changes, injuries, and timeouts.

The official started the clock as soon as both teams were set for kickoff and kicking team let the remaining 15 seconds run off without kicking ball, end of 3rd qtr

Agree with 1 & 2- #3 is probably not workable/enforceable.

Basically, a way to speed up these blowouts but still allow reasonable opportunities for backups/younger kids to get some time.

My only rebuttle to this is what about the JV/ Freshman games??? Isn't that enough snaps?? It bothers me that people think the team that way ahead just start subbing early in the 3rd quarter. The 2nd and 3rd stringers end up playing two quarters Friday night, 4 on Saturday morning?? They play more than the starters do?? Then the freshmen get to play a quarter Friday, a couple on Saturday and their 4 quarters for freshmen games.
Why are we in such a hurry to get these games over with. Just bag it and go back to the regular 4 quarters.

Re-read the opening post.... especially situation #3. Key words... "may not have enough to field a full jv team"

I'm just guessing here, but if there is a full jv game scheduled for Saturday morning then it wouldn't apply..

NOT ALL SCHOOLS CAN FIELD A JV TEAM let alone a full freshman team.

I agree that #3 could be hard to enforce.
Since this would most likely be something that would mostly apply to division 6/7 it could be feasible.

Definitely won't happen but I put it out there.

The official did it correctly then. The clock is supposed to start as soon as the ball is made ready for play, even on kickoffs. I used to think like you did, but I'm part of our school's press box personnel and confirmed this with the officials.

Guarantee it's coming. Probably the same "30-point after half" rule (which could be a pain if score goes back and forth quickly around 29-30 points). Other timed sports have added it as well. Just a matter of time before some form is added to basketball.

Running Clock will never come in Basketball...1 hour 15 minute game in hoops...2 1/2-3 hour game in football..(plus injury factor) The game I was at this past weekend had 8 minutes left in first half at 8PM..Ridiculous.....then 23 minute halftime..ugh... The clock should start up as soon as ball is set for play IMO..( If a player is tackled out of bounds, then clock starts on set for play)..Only way I would consider getting rid of running clock is if 1 of the competing schools is unable to field a jv & freshman team

As a parent/ fan, I think you need to maximize the playing time for all players. The running clock eliminates playing time, period, no matter how much it's worked. Just allow coaches, as we have since the beginning to time, figure out playing time and how to finish games.
If fans don't want to watch, or don't have the time, then simply go home. It's silly to work on all they crazy rules and situations, when it has a bearing on so few occasions.
Or one solution, simply allow the coaches/ AD to ask about it in a 50-0 halftime game, if agreed upon by both schools/ coaches, then run the clock. We don't need rules for everything. Just good common sense.

Could just not go to the game if the time committment is too big of a burden for you. Players and coaches put in hundreds of hours a year to play a guaranteed 10 games. Why shortern these moments for the kids to play just so fans can get home 20 minutes earlier?

Left 4 minutes to go in 2nd qtr,.went to eat with my better half....got in car after eating and listened to the start of 4th qtr...Will not be attending any more games.. Is a jv game on Saturday not enough for younger kids?
