I’m laughing at this thread, well not really laughing but it’s amusing to see these posts, because it’s the same with everything I’ve heard about FSW this year. They are one-player team.
The thing that people don’t take into account is that it does take basketball talent, and understanding to know what’s best for the team. Coach Smith at FSW had convinced these kids that it’s in the team’s best interest to forgo shots, not force the action, and stick with the game plan of getting the ball to Troike as much as possible. Much easier said than done. Most basketball failures consist of kids doing more than they are capable of doing. Taking shots “just because your open” isn’t always the best shot.
FSW has beaten some of the best teams/ best coaches in NW Ohio the past few weeks, and I’m sure those teams did everything they could defensively vs. FSW. The other thing to consider is FSW plays great defense themselves. To keep the scores low, you have to be able to handle the ball against pressure and play defense, two things they apparently do well.

I understand what you are saying Sense and for me I'm just talking basketball. I mean whether it's amusing to you or not, for me I was just saying what I saw. Defensively I thought they were ok. Maybe not as good as you are saying. I mean for instance vs Ottoville, they appeared to have played a zone and as it may appeared to be good defense because they didn't allow Ottoville to score, Ottoville also just didn't shoot. I mean they passed up on a lot of open shots. Ya if the ball doesn't go in the hoop, it may appear to make the opposing team look good defensively. As far as handling ball pressure. I thought that was their weakness. Seemed like for the most part everytime Ottoville pressed them or put heavy ball pressure on them, they struggled. Either turning the ball over or losing the ball to only go out of bounds.

As far as what they do to win games. Ya it may work for the most part. I didn't think Ottoville played well defensively and could have done a lot more different things to help them win the game so I'm not so convinced they gave it their best effort and to be honest maybe it was just finally their time after all the great basketball they played to beat good teams like Crestview, Kalida, and New Riegal teams they were not suppose to beat. But for the most part, I do agree with you about doing what's best for your team to win. If it works, why change? But for FSW, if teams are able to adjust, I just hope FSW coach knows how to adjust for his team otherwise it could get ugly because from what I saw other than 52, none of them girls looked comfortable at hitting a consistent shot outside the paint. And they will need to do that to win state. I do wish them luck though.

Lets call it what it is - FSW is in state semi finals regardless of how good or bad they are. I give their coach credit actually, he has a team that has a superstar on it and a bunch of role players to support it and he has beaten the likes of Carey, Arlington, Pettisville and now Ottoville. Do I think they are the best team in OH? Nope. Do I think they are the best team in NW Ohio? Nope. Do I think they are gelling at the right time of the year and catching a multitude of breaks? Yes. That is why it's tourney basketball and so exciting. I have no idea how they are doing it, but in the end, its about winning not having the best players on floor. FSW could lost by 25 this week and it wouldn't surprise me, and at the same time, they could win by 2 (again) and it wouldn't surprise me.

FSW made the final four like you said, congrats. It does not matter what you all say about Dave Kleman, and that he did not coach that well in the game. Ottoville did not play well & that is the way is was. Let's move on, good luck to all in the D-4 & D-3 (OG), may the best and luckiest team win. Great Job done by Ottoville, the great 8. Fantastic. They will be strong again next year with their always difficult schedule.

I saw FSW early in the year and no way did I see a team I thought had any chance to get to state. But they improved and really turned it on the last 10 games or so and in tourney. Well coached and they use their strength as well as anyone. Ottoville had knocked off some good teams in tourney play and FSW beat them by double digits. Like Postplayer said they got hot at right time and caught some breaks too. You only have to be better than your opponent for that 32 minutes on game night! Their D may not look great but the big girl makes a huge difference in the middle of that D as she blocks or changes a bunch of shots and controls the D boards. Allows guards to go out and pressure shooters without fear of getting beat off the dribble. Not expecting them to come home with the title but they may cause some trouble for a bit.

I guess the think is they keep playing teams and beating them, then we hear how it was the worst offensive/ defensive game of the year for the team that was beaten? At some point you credit the winning team.

Certianly FSW is playing with house money because NOBODY anticipated this. It's kind of refreshing to see a team that just plays each game as it comes, does it's thing and finds ways to win? They have a superstar that dominates both ends of the floor, and a bunch of girls who understand how to play and how to win. As simple as that.

33 points, 17 rebounds, 5 blocked shots. What does she have to do to be considered a superstar?

Today she was named AP Div IV co-player of the year in Ohio. Not bad for a sophomore.

She's a junior.....

Also, with the likes of Wake Forest, Penn St, and all the MAC schools looking at her it would be safe to say she is indeed a
superstar.....

What I saw last weekend was not a superstar. It was someone who stood below the basket and threw a ball up. And on the other side she simply put her hands up when someone shot it. Maybe she had a bad game (doubtful with 33 points). Maybe she was sick. But that was not a superstar.

When I think of a superstar I think of someone who is well-rounded in every aspect of the game. Someone who can shoot, handle the ball relatively well, etc. Someone who shines and can beat you any which way.

I'm agreeing with Blue Jay here. I think labeling her as a "superstar" is a bit much. I think she is good but not that good. What I saw last weekend was exactly as Blue described it. She got some very easy blocks, rebounds and points all due to her height. Nothing too impressive.

Hardly any true center is a superstar then. If they can't handle 3s or break a press, They can't be superstars? Tim Duncan isn't a superstar according to those premises.
I agree with BVCgrad that Shaq was undeniably a superstar. He had zero shooting ability (even on FTs), but he changed the game.
I'll go with the very simple adage of: A superstar drastically affects the way the game is played. I'm not talking about a 3pt or defensive specialist/role player. When someone steps on the floor, they drastically change the way both teams adjust their game plans. Troike 100% does this. Especially in the tournament, no team has yet to contain her — Her offense aside, she blocks/disrupts nearly every shot 5-7' in.

Well we all have different meanings for certain words. sounds to me you are describing an impact kind of player. I however don't think super star means quite that in my dictionary. To me it's someone who is extremely talented and very well known. I think she is good but not Extremely talented. maybe I havnt seen enough of her but like Jay said, she seems a bit stationary On both ends and with her height can get points rebounds and blocks fairly easy. No disrespect to the girl, but to be labeled a superstar she would have to be very impressive and I just don't see that.
