TIFFIN, OH –
Tiffin Calvert, who came in riding a five game winning streak, faced an Edon team in week 11 who happened to have 2 more wins than the Senecas. Edon, brought a very talented passing attack to Frost-Kalnow stadium on Saturday evening, that put up 25 first half points, in a thrilling back and forth battle. However, it was the Calvert defense that held Edon to 6 second half points, in narrowly squeaking out a 34-31 win at home.
Earlier in the season, Calvert had some troubles against a couple of teams that featured dual threat quarterbacks (Woodmore, & Seneca East). Calvert was unable to slow those teams down, which resulted in their 1-4 start to the season. On Saturday evening, the Senecas showed little signs of stopping another dual threat quarterback in Edon’s Kaden Sapp. Sapp, who is just a junior this year, brought a veteran group of 9 seniors, that helped Edon take a 6-0 lead after their first possession. Sapp capped a 12 play drive with a 5 yard run of his own for the score.
The Senecas answered right back as both teams seemed to do all night. After it appeared Edon had stopped the Senecas on their 2nd possession of the evening, Calvert was looking at a 4th and 8, with the punt team on the field. However, Calvert’s coach Todd Fox likes to play an aggressive style of football, and Tyler Long took a direct snap and scampered 43 yards for a Seneca Touchdown (7-6).
Calvert’s lead was short-lived, when Edon scored on the first play of their 2nd possession with a 46 yard touchdown jaunt. That’s where the score stood after one (12-7), as the Bombers had missed their second straight XP.
Following a couple of three-and-outs, the Senecas regained the lead when Tyler Long took a shotgun snap for Calvert and ran with it for a 73 yard score (14-12). Long and Sapp of Edon were putting on a show.
Quickly after the Senecas went back on top, the Bombers connected on an 18 yard touchdown pass from Sapp to Hug, which covered 48 yards in 8 plays and the scoreboard read (18-14) Bombers.
Soon after Sapp’s touchdown pass, Calvert’s Long was back at it. The junior who’s given opposing defenses fits all year, scored from 21 yards away, on a 7 play 68 yard drive, in which Long covered 57 of those on the ground that gave the Senecas a (21-18) lead with 3:32 left in the 1st half.
Less than two minutes later the Bombers marched down the field again, thanks to consecutive pass plays of Sapp to Brock Thiel (34, 4), that saw Edon shake-up the scoreboard once again (25-21). However, if there was one drawback to the Bombers 1st half, it was three missed XP’s on four tries. The score remained the same as we headed into halftime.
Following a blocked punt on Edon’s first possession of the 2nd half, it took Calvert two plays as junior and bruiser Matt Iannantuono, strutted in from two yards out. We stood at (27-25) after the Senecas missed XP with 9:04 in the 3rd.
After both teams exchanged just their second three-and-outs of the evening, the Bombers took over the lead again, when Sapp connected with teammate Trevor Green on a 25 yard hookup with 5:13 in the 3rd (31-27). This would be the only score of the 2nd half for the Bombers.
Following, a steady dose of Calvert blitzes, the Senecas regained possession after a Bombers turnover on downs, which ended the third quarter. Quickly, Long made way again, this time through the air as he hit junior wide receiver Donovan Stith on a 41 yard scoring strike that gave Calvert a (34-31) lead with 11:03 remaining.
The Bombers would get as close as the Senecas five yard line on their next possession, as they turned in what looked to be one of their best drives of the evening when they etched out a 9 play drive. However, Pat Herron’s defense for the Senecas withstood the Bombers surge and shut the door for what would end up being the game’s biggest defensive stand.
Edon had one last shot to go 80 yards in 0:21, but the Bombers fell shy of the end zone, after a completed pass on a hook-and-ladder play that ended the game.
Tiffin Calvert will continue to be the higher seed next week, as they will play Delphos St. John’s in week 12. St. John’s, who possesses quite a threat as the #8 seed in Region 24, is coming off an impressive win of their own as they took down #1 Leipsic on the road tonight (33-18).
Last Appearance: Delphos St. John’s last met Tiffin Calvert two years ago at Doyt L. Perry Stadium in Bowling Green, and took the Senecas down (35-0) in week 12.
