Cleveland Heights Lutheran East has 5 transfers this year. They are a D4 school. I hear 3 of them are D1 college quality players. Think they may have been recruited? Just seems OHSAA picked Lima Sr. to make a point while letting others get away with stuff.

I'd agree, but the distance from Lima these players came from I think raised a red flag in itself.

#1 I feel bad for these kids being denied the opportunity to play HS basketball......yeah they visited several cities and settled on Lima and that raised a red flag- per the OHSAA. What is wrong with looking around and finding the best opportunity out there for these players? Should they have gone somewhere else in a bigger city where they wouldn't be noticed? Maybe they were recruited by Lima ( no clue and nothing to back this up), but if they weren't, and they thought this was their best opportunity to play at a high level D1 school in a good conference, shame on them :sarcasm:

Also, if they came from similar situations, why could one play and one not? ....and the one guy who can play can play the 2nd half of the season, but not in the tournament? seems very arbitrary by the OHSAA.

according to the Lima News article Lima attorney Brad Kelly intervened on behalf of the players, so this sounds like a plea deal....2 players, one sits and the other plays half the season or push it and neither play at all.

hopefully someone can help fill in the blanks on this, what grade level are these boys? if not seniors, can they come back and play next year?

According to the link in the first post, Quinones is a senior & is permitted to finish this regular season. Colon is a junior and is not playing this year. It states that "Colon's family chose not to appeal the decision but Quinones and his mother, Belitza Esquilin, asked for a hearing with the OHSAA." Sounds like Colon sits this year & plays next year.

here is a good take on this situation, looks like things were done on the up and up and the OHSAA is screwing these boys out of playing basketball this year, except for the 1/2 season for Quinones with no tournament:

It's a well known fact that TSJ holds open gyms every year , they look at talent from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, etc. Their coach... (NOT PLAYERS) had to miss coaching the tournament last year for approaching kids at open gyms, however they get away with it for the most part and the OHSAA looks the other way. They go after the urban, public schools because they don't want them to knock off the big city private schools who have the representation on their board. They are a crooked bunch who line their pockets instead of putting the mega monies they make from tournament games in all sports , back into the schools where it belongs. It's not like Lima Senior is a dynasty, Coach Q is a well known, well liked coach that I am sure these young men wanted to play for, instead the OHSAA ruined their final year (s) of high school.

The problem I have with this is it goes on everywhere! Would it have made a difference if this was a private school instead of public? My personal belief is that it would have been overlooked at a private school.

It's insulting for the OHSAA to investigate because "Why Lima"? Would they have been investigated if they went to TSJ? Or Cornerstone Christian? Lutheran East? St. Ignatius?

Do we know the OHSAA used the 'Why Lima?' reason? That's coming from the appellant's attorney, but I haven't seen the OHSAA comment on this yet.

Oh no, they have to win with their own players, like many others do.

I think Lima Senior opened up potential for this type of issue when they hired Simpson, because of his AAU activities

I've said it time and time again...............the OHSAA is the true definition of a thug......I've never had much use for them starting with the almighty Bobby Goldring. It's a cash cow for a select few, much like Senators and Representatives.... they answer to no one. Do I believe "Q" made contact or picked up the phone?...hell yea. The OHSAA and AAU are intertwined. A few years ago there was a lot of ruckus made by a few schools in the Wayne Co. area......hasn't changed a thing. "Mr. Findlay" used to be someone I respected but he's no better than the rest............just wish Trump would have run for Director of the OHSAA :bow2:

I had heard these boys played on Quinicies AAU team and that was why they wanted to come to Lima? either way, I don't understand the reasoning behind these kids not being able to play as they moved into the district (recruited or not) from outside and according to OHSAA this is a "legal way" and they both should be able to play the entire season.

^^^ 'Recruited or not'? No, according to the OHSAA it is not the 'legal way' if they were recruited. It seems the ruling indicates they believe recruiting took place.

Agreed. We all know it happens, but if it's bad enough to get caught, open recruiting is bad. I don't care if it's Lima area or elsewhere, public or private. I know private schools get more leeway, but I don't like it.
I don't know the answer or every story behind them, but how many of Qs club players have transferred into Lima Senior over past couple years?

I heard that Sammy Villegas had something to do with them choosing Lima, the fact is they should be able to go wherever they want as long as they do it the right way. Being at Lima before the school year started and setting out half the season should be enough. But to say why would they choose Lima ??? , what because they didn't choose their school district...maybe the fact that for the size of city, we have produced several Mr. Basketballs was a reason..The OHSAA BLOWS

Lima Sr. did things according to procedure......imagine if something like this would have happened in Lima.

In all honesty fellows & ladies , Ohio sports the way we oldtimers know it is dead. AAU has poisoned high school sports. Especially basketball, and yes I was part of it for 2-3 years. High school basketball is dead in cities. The only hope we have is the country people keep theirs pure. :bow2: "THE ONE AND ONLY PROPHET HAS SPOKEN " :bow2:

I'm back, just a newer name since I changed emails, computers, etc and forgot my original passwords. Hence the oldtimer reference.

Thought it was finally time I renew my overly educated posts on here.
