TIFFIN -- Speed seemed to be the name of the game at Frost-Kalnow Stadium on Saturday night.
Coldwater had it, and Chippewa did not.
The Cavaliers showed their quickness on both sides of the ball and dominated Chippewa en route to a 49-21 victory over the Chipps.
A great deal of that speed came in the form of junior quarterback Brody Hoying, who rushed for two touchdowns.
Coldwater took the opening kickoff and marched methodically down the field. The 8-play, 70-yard drive was capped by a 13-yard pass from Hoying to Adam Klosterman. Matt Kramer's PAT gave the Cavaliers a 7-0 lead at the 8:54 mark of the opening quarter.
The Coldwater defense forced Chippewa into a three-and-out and made the Chipps pay dearly. The Cavs got good field position near midfield and put together an eight play drive. Brody Hoying's 3-yard run gave Coldwater a 14-0 lead at the 4:25 mark of the first quarter.
There wasn't much action until midway through the second quarter. Chippewa got in the red zone, but the Chipps turned it over on downs after a fourth down pass from Bailey Breitenstine to Zach Zollinger fell short of the first down marker. Coldwater scored in just two plays, with Brody Hoying racing 67 yards for the touchdown on the second play from scrimmage. Kramer's PAT made the score 21-0 with 6:20 remaining until halftime.
Coldwater's onslaught was far from over, though. Adam Klosterman picked off a Breitenstine pass just shy of midfield and then Drew Otten made the score 28-0 with just 1:25 remaining until halftime. A three-and-out by Chippewa led to one last score before intermission. On the first play following the punt, Hoying hooked up with Derek Thobe on a 26-yard scoring strike with just 37 seconds remaining.
Coldwater score quickly early in the third quarter after a fumbled option pitch gave the Cavs the ball at the Chippewa 3-yard line. Mitch Schoenherr's 3-yard run made the score 42-0 and then an interception by Brandon Kunk led to a 40-yard touchdown run that made the score 49-0 a little more than halfway through the third quarter.
Facing mainly the second team Coldwater defense, Chippewa was able to find the end zone three times in the last quarter and a half. Bo Whetsell's 7-yard run made the score 49-7 with 2:08 remaining in the third quarter. A Coldwater fumble on the second play of the ensuing possession led to a 5-yard Nick Zollinger run that made the score 49-14 with 18 seconds left in the quarter. The scoring concluded on Josh Miller's 1-yard run with 7:27 remaining in the game.
Chippewa bows out with a 9-3 record. Coldwater, now 10-2, with losses coming against undefeated and top-ranked Kenton and undefeated and top-ranked Marion Local, advances to next week's Region 16 final at Findlay's Donnell Stadium on Saturday night, where they will face 8-3 Huron, who defeated Loudonville 17-13 at Medina.
