With photos all over social media & newspapers showing the potential game-winning shot leaving the Ayersville
kids' hand with 0.1 showing on the clock at Napoleon, you do have to feel bad not only for Pilot players & fans, but
I'll bet officials feel worse. They are human & make mistakes like anybody, it's just that their's are potentially in front of
thousands of people. It's become routine in NBA & major college for blown calls to get reversed by replay, and those are full-time professional referees . I'll bet that will be coming for levels below the state prep finals soon also, just maybe not down to district level.
We were actually the beneficiary of one of these in a league game with Bath a couple years ago, although less clear, when
it appeared we got a shot off late that got counted

But when you see the video it's clear that it shouldn't have counted. There's no way a ball gets tipped twice and a shot gets off in 0.9 seconds. The clock started late and it shouldn't have counted. The photo of the ball out of his hands is misleading.

yeah, the error was on the person keeping the clock. If the official deems that .09 had elapsed then he (rightly so) waved off the basket even if the ball was released by the shooter before the buzzer/ backboard light.

I think they got it right. I do have a question though. Is it true they use video replay at the state tournament? If so, would this shot have counted there? Do they have discretion if the clock starts late or do they just go by the red light on the board? I have no idea how they would handle th8/ situation.
I still think they made the right call either way.

They have replay only for the end of the game to determine if the shot went off before time expired. If faced with this situation, it would probably be a judgement call to even look at when the clock started, as that is NOT a use for replay as indicated (so far).

Only in the state championship game

I thought it was an EXCELLENT job by the officials. Obviously the timer has the most difficult job in that situation. I believe officials in these situations are going to take the clock into consideration, but also make a judgment in their own mind of what can be a good shot. Obviously with only .9 second, anything other than a clean catch and shoot would not be a good shot. Great call by the officials to get it right.
