I think the other thing to consider is the transiency of today’s student bodies. Yes, there are a few pockets of little towns (i.e. Putnam county schools like Ft. Jennings, Contintental, MAC schools like Ft. Loramie, Minster, Jackson Center, etc. ) but mostly today, you have fewer generation after generation families that stay in communities. People don’t follow their local high school like they did 20-30+ years ago. Then you get to the bigger schools, and you’re lucky to get family and friends of the players to go to games. Has nothing to do with price of the ticket, although when you get to the state level, and you get to $10/ $12/ $15 per head, add parking (which really frosts me, I mean you talk about gouging the consumer, where else are we supposed to park?), food, hotel, and with a family, you now have a $200-$300 price tag on a game. I don’t know how the LB/ Ottawa Glandorf folks do it, they are typically doing it for boys and girls for the month of March. Maybe they hold back their tax return money for “tournament funds”.

What do you think folks are doing with their entertainment $$ then? I think high school sports is great entertainment for the price, but I'm old school. I'll be the first to say, that the overall quality isn't maybe what it once was, but still it's enjoyable to me to support the kids, the schools, and to visit with many of the friendly people who are still into it. Also, half entertaining to watch some of the adults who make fools of themselves in the stands lol!! Lots of knowledge in the stands!! Lol!

outspoken, it's not old school anymore. People, especially young (below 40) have ALOT of ways to spend money today. Look at the difference in generations from the 50 somethings to the 30 somethings. Today's young people drive nice cars, not beaters. They buy homes or condos, they don't rent duplexes or live in starter homes. They go on vacations (and I mean they fly places, not drive). Their entertainment dollar is a big piece of their earnings.

16,500 more watched the ohsaa state tournament over three days this year. This 2016 tournament was a good one, attendance-wise and the play on the floor was as good as ever, even though the Thurs. games were all blowouts.

It was a good tournament. D1 was very good, and D2 John Glenn was arguably perhaps the most fun team to watch.

A few related thoughts:

Attendance increased by an average of around 1,400 per game, but there were still two games where attendance was under 8,000. On the flip side, I believe I heard the 15,292 for Lima Senior - Wilmington was the highest-attended Divison 1 game in nine years.

Scoring also increased, which made the games somewhat more enjoyable to watch.

That, however, didn't necessarily lead to competitiveness. 7 of the 12 games were decided by double digits.

Mentioned this in another post but did anyone else attend the L-View-Jackson Center game surprised by the small crowd JC brought?? L'view had 2-3x the amount of fans...student section couldn't have been more 60-70 kids?? Wasn't sure what to make of it

I thought that was strange as well. Sometimes districts are on spring break?? I thought I remembered them traveling well last time they were at state. Sometime teams don't seem to travel as well if the town doesn't think they will win. I have no idea if that was the case, but I have definitely seen that affect a crowd.

Not that it's always the case, but the amount of times a school goes to state normally has an impact. I don't believe Lima Senior or Wilmington had been to state for a long, long time. Jackson Center is a perennial regional/ state caliber program. Not an excuse, but if your school goes to state once every 20-30 years, it becomes a bigger deal. With Lima Senior's, graduating seniors, it may be awhile again.

We've also talked about it before, relatively it's affordable, but if you have a family of 4, and you start shelling out $7-$8 per game, per ticket, parking, food...for the month of March, you are throwing out $50-$75 per ball game to take your family.

Wasn't aware JC is even a shadow of a perennial power...

Per the OHSAA program, Jackson Center has 37 boys in the upper three grades. Pretty small school. They've been to state four times: 2016, 2012, 1985 and 1963. Don't know how many times they've been to the regionals but don't really consider them a state power.

Lima Senior's last trip to state: 1992. Wilmington's: 1927.
