Sounds like the BVC has rejected expansion talk

Don;t give up just yet. Number of BVC schools on board with league expansion. Not all... but hopefully enough. Should know more in a few weeks. Now is the time to look. Lots of schools scrambling for leagues. Could be to the BVC advantage as they can pick and choose since it's their party.

The MAL rejected expansion two years ago and it was their undoing. The leaders of the league had their minds and ears closed when there were whispers elsewhere. I'd think with what's going on in the rest of the area and the state of a few of their schools, expansion would be to the benefit of the BVC. If anything it would protect them against the unknown future, something the MAL should have taken into consideration.

You're exactly on Polk. The timing is perfect. Take advantage of some good quality schools looking for a new home. It's in the best interest of the BVC to look for new opportunities to make the league stronger. There are some good ideas on the table that can benefit all members from the LB's and Leipsic down to the Arcadias and Vanlues. Your point is valid. Do nothing and some schools may be forced to make their own decisions, similar to the MAL

Buck's right. Problem is (without naming names) some schools are so scared of change (and some additional competition) that I'm not sure this flies. Need to change a few schools minds to get to the magic number of eight for this to happen.

go big small divisions and get two more teams, now with the advent of the N10, which two they are i'm not sure. riverdale would be the logical choice, but the were proactive, and found a home. hopewell-louden might be a choice but its out of that neat little circle, and new riegal doesnt play football,so I see this going nowhere unless you start picking from the NWC and I don't see that happening. I thought Ada might be a choice ,but after a conversation they are content with the NWC. So to Coach B point that is probably why the BVC is apprehensive about expansion what benefit does it have for the league and its members?

Why stop at two schools. Lets go get 4 schools and break into two divisions. Play six games in your division, a couple of crossover games to keep rivalies alive and allow 2 games for non conference. This allows the smaller schools to find competitive games and the bigger schools to find an attractive gate. The bigger schools cannot generate enough revenue to keep their programs flush when you consistently have 50 -75 fans from the smaller opposing schools show up at your gate.

And for all other sports besides football? Leipsic and Pandora won't want 20 league games.

The PCL problem is one that would have to be considered, maybe there should be a separate BVC discussion thread.

I've heard nothing, but I suppose that's because there isn't anything to hear.

Saw that - don't believe it unless they have several other schools joining with them. You don't leave a league you've been part of for a league that's on life support.

My thoughts exactly Polk, as an MAL fan I was hoping there was another team or two involved but I guess we just wait and see what shakes out. I can see SBC getting way too big for SMCC as they look to the future though.

Yes, the SBC has always been bigger than SMCC...but the travel is also minimal and the gates are good and they've been doing it for a long, long time. Calvert and SJCC were part of that league up until 1986.

You can be assured that with BVC expansion talk and the formation of the N10 this league is dead in the water with who's left standing.

Maybe and probably, but until something happens anything can happen. A month ago we all thought the N10 was a done deal and boom, now it's not. We didn't think the BVC would expand, now there's a strong possibility. All it takes is one surprise move and the entire corner of the state could be affected. My guess is that there is still a strong possibilty of that surprise move that exists.

I would tend to agree if HL and NB end up in BVC (who could blame them) then the MAL is done. Carey is the one that will be interesting....they agreed to jump to N10 but BVC may appeal to them more so maybe they leave the N10 before they even play a game there.

Still nothing more from MAL? Are they even trying to do anything? Other forums indicating SMCC will remain in SBC due to the unstable conditions in the other leagues they were looking at. Now BVC set to possibly take a couple more MAL teams. The TAAC does not even want to talk about expansion with MAL schools. Can't blame MAL schools for starting to look out for their own interests as they may be independent if they do not.

Here is the official announcement....

http://www.sanduskyc..._ID=236176&id=0

PANTHERS & THE SBC

Mike Savona announcement
Dear Panther Family,

In late December, we were approached by the MAL (Midland Athletic League) about the possibility of joining their conference. They are losing three of the larger schools from their league and are looking to replace them with three schools more in line with the enrollments of the remaining members. Their goal is to remain a twelve-team conference.

Although we are very pleased with the SBC, we felt an obligation to our current and future student/athletes to investigate this option. The reason we looked into this is that we are only 40% of the size of the next smallest SBC School, and some league members are four to five times our size. In the MAL we would have been in the middle of the pack, size wise, with our enrollment.

Meetings were held with coaches, CCAB members, the “M” Club, and school board officials. All groups were supportive of us continuing to gather information in order to make a good decision. Once all information was gathered, the intention was to hold forums with parents, students, and the general public.

In the meantime, two of the other schools pursued by the MAL withdrew their interest. This and some other situations have led to uncertainty as to the direction the MAL officials will be taking. We feel it would not be wise to continue the process any further given this uncertainty. Today, Wednesday, March 7, we will notify SBC officials of our intention to stay in the Sandusky Bay Conference.

It must be stated that representatives from both leagues were very cooperative and wonderful to work with. We would like to thank both groups for their patience as we looked into the situation.

Thank you to all of the Sandusky Central Catholic community members for their time and input at the various meetings.

Sincerely,
Mike Savona
Principal
