A friend & I were talkin' as he was impatiently trying to get home this evening while driving through Norwalk.... said he was going to slow down 'cause he wasn't sure he would not get pulled over for speeding for 5 mph over the limit there.....but, stated that if he did, he'd say, " Thank you very much, you mother Trucker...." ~~ which just happens to be one of the coolest school nicknames around, imo......that led to this topic....We've had best/wost mascots before, but, nicknames are a bit different....

I have plenty of others too, but, for the sake of the thread to hopefully create a li'l more off-season chatter in this forum, I won't list.....

So, what do think are some of the best & worst team nicknames? <figured I'd throw in 'worst' too, 'cause there's some pretty stinkin' ones, as well, out there! :D

Maryville (Mo.) Spoofhounds
Teutopolis (Ill.) Wooden Shoes (and their girls teams, the Lady Shoes)
Hickman (Mo.) Kewpies
Pekin, Ill., used to be the Chinks (think about it a minute, you'll get it) but changed to Dragons

Around NW Ohio, I like Locomotives (Montpelier). At least it's not yet another boring Wildcats or Tigers or Bulldogs.

One of the most clever is Upper Scioto Valley Rams - Roundhead/Alger/McGuffey.
Lima Bath "Wildkittens" for the girls' teams is also clever.

Any gender specific nickname where they tack "Lady" on the front for the girls team is problematic (e.g., "Lady Rams").

I think changing your mascot name for the girls team is stupid. Unless its a gender specific name like Avon Lake Shoremen and Shoregals. There is no reason to change Wildcats. Even adding "lady" before the mascot (Lady Patriots) is dumb. We all see they are girls. They are the Patriots. They are the Wildcats.

That's cool, reminds me of how they got the name "Tinora." Took the first letters from the 4 townships that make up the district(TI- Tiffin, NO- Noble, R- Richland, A- Adams) and combined them into the name of the new high school.

Central Missouri State Univerisity's men's teams are the Mules. Since there's no such thing as a female mule, their women's teams are the Jennies.

Here's another good one: The University of California-Santa Cruz are the Banana Slugs. That is awesome.

Centenary College are the Gents. So they call their women's teams the Ladies.

Agree on the girls names, and why is Wildkittens clever? I never understood why they would want to be known as baby cats. Dumb.

What color should they be? Are Tigers Yellow and Purple? Are bulldogs Green and White, Orange and Black, or Blue and Silver? Are Wildcats Blue and Yellow?

Heidelberg University Student Princes.

And their women's teams? Pretty sure they are the "Lady Student Princes" (even though I think most people, even the people on campus, refer to the female teams as the "Student Princesses" anyway).

Perhaps the worse nickname ever...
