This is in the 4x400 relay. The hand off between the first and second leg was missed and the baton fell off the track. The baton was then picked up by the first runner and handed off again to the second runner.
My question is, since the baton went off the track should that team be disqualified?

It is my understanding that if it doesn't Interfere with another team, and it is still within the exchange lane it is ok. I had that same question a few years ago and that is what I was told.

That is the way I understand it also. I am not an official but here is what I have been told: At the time of the exchange, if you did not interfere with any other runners, and you did not gain an advantage, then there should be no disqualification.
Also interesting: I have been told in a 100 meter race a runner could start out in lane one and end in lane 8 and if there was no bumping or cutting anyone off this would be legal. Interesting plus why would anyone want to try this just in case?

There was no interference, inside the exchange lane and no advantage but the baton did go off the track. I do not recall if the 1st leg left the track to hand it to the 2nd leg or if the 2nd leg was off the track when she recieved the baton. They both went after it.

It actually happened between the 2nd and 3rd leg, the girls did a great job of not giving up, and still winning by what 4-5 seconds?

Asked an official the other night and he was sure the call was correct. As long as there was no interference with the other runner and between the exchange zone the baton can leave the track. He did think that the runner receiving the baton must be on the track but was not sure about that.
Good luck to all the runners and participants this weekend.
