Good in moderation. I also think kids that play basketball should think twice about playing club ball. Some club seasons don't start until early March. With all the injuries today, playing two physcially demanding sports at the same time is questionable. Club makes it possible by practicing and playing on Sundays, but the body needs rest. Can't play basketball for 5-6 days a week, and volleyball on Sunday, just asking for knee, ankle, shin splints, stress fractures and other injuries.

My fear is many kids are eliminating basketball to play volleyball almost year around. And even worse, some of these same kids then hate volleyball by the time they are 14 years old and can't "catch up" to basketball.

Overall it's good, but just know your options and limitations.

My school had a JV player miss TWO basketball games this season because of a conflict with club volleyball. I always have been and always will be of the belief that your SCHOOL SPORT that is IN SEASON should take precedence over everything else. The mother of the aforementioned player (who, not surprisingly, is the JV volleyball coach) made comments along the lines of, "I haven't put the kind of $$$ into basketball that I have into volleyball," and "I feel like there is no place for ***** in the basketball program." Well, no kidding. That sort of mentality is a slap in the face of the basketball coaches. You can't have it both ways.

Sadly at small schools, you can. The numbers are so low that the school has to cave to part time players. If you're the basketball coach and it's a situation where you either don't have a JV team, or you take a few of these kids who are going to go to club vball over a basketball game, there isn't much you can do.
I always laugh that people will pay thousands of $$'s for club ball, travel and AAU, complain abou the cost, then not play their school sponsored sport for free??

At our school, we have enough kids to always have a JV team, so that is never an issue.

I disagree that you can have it both ways. How is it fair to the other girls that are at every practice and every game that another girl can pick and choose when she shows up to basketball?

Like you, I get a chuckle out of the resources that parents pour into club volleyball and JO. And for what? A significant percentage of those kids will never play college volleyball at a high level, so what is the logic behind it?
