Regarding college, the most plausible circumstances to letter in 2 sports for college is to be a pure runner (XC and track) or to do a fall sport and track (football/volleyball and track). It's very rare to do much of a combination of other sports. Another example, although not simultaneous, is to be a grad school player (soccer player kicking for the football team in his 5th year of eligibility).

I’m thinking that years ago former Patrick Henry basketball J.V. and late Van Buren head basketball coach Lynn Martin did that at Findlay College? I’m not sure about where he went to high school or what his athletic career was like there.
Lynn Martin went to Mount Blanchard High School. He excelled at basketball and football (I always heard stories that he kicked bare-footed).

Do we really need to go back 50 years to find a 3 sport college athlete?

...just giving info on RWB 71's inquiry...that's all.

To answer your question...it's beginning to look that way, isn't it? Thanks to year-round specialization in your favorite sport and dreaming of full-ride scholarships, this is what we're left with.

In the big 3 sports (Basketball, Baseball, Football), Defiance has had several who played all 4 years. I may be missing some, but here are the recent ones and their graduating year. Alex Nofziger - 2010, Cam Stykemain - 2007, Mark Nofziger - 2004, Will Swary - 2004, Terry McDonald 1994. Wes Detter, a current junior at Defiance is on target to join this club. Others have played all 3 sports their junior and senior years but skipped a sport as freshman or sophomores.

Kids that won't even sniff the chance of a scholarship are specializing now.

This is really getting into the "wayback machine", but how about a 4 sport start in the College Ranks. Jim Brown at Syracuse:

From Wiki -
Perhaps more impressive was his success as a multi-sport athlete. In addition to his football accomplishments, he excelled in basketball, track, and especially lacrosse. As a sophomore, he was the second leading scorer for the basketball team (15 ppg), and earned a letter on the track team. His junior year, he averaged 11.3 points in basketball, and was named a second-team All-American in lacrosse. His senior year, he was named a first-team All-American in lacrosse (43 goals in 10 games to rank second in scoring nationally).[

No mention of wife beating? That may have been his best skill.

If you need to specialize in one sport to earn a D-1 scholarship, I believe you probably are not a D 1 athlete. Just 30 years hanging out seeing unrealistic dreams. Also, If you have to spend big money for training and film/recruiting aides to be D1 you should save the money and invest it to pay for your college tuition. Now, before I get abused...[go ahead and bring it] there are a lot of D2 and NAIA schools who offer money. GOOD services can/will find these schools for you. Of course you can too. LJ

The is such a true statement. And there are some, and I mean some, D2 and NAIA's that offer money, but not full rides. Many are partials and it's just chasing an unrealistic dream. So my advice is to play all your high school sports. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

If you go back really far.................I don't think the OHSAA allowed more than three years of varsity competition? I'm pretty sure that Rich Reese's uncle Max was a starter for Hamler back in the 1940s and wasn't allowed to play his senior year of 1947 so he coached the Freshmen ball team and I'm thinking they went undefeated.

In, 30 plus years, I have never seen a signing on the TV or talked to a kid who said that a key component to their earning a scholarship was specializing on one sport. LJ
