That would have to be T.H. He was also a great teacher of the game.

can someone just say the name already?!
and if he was a star when RM was in grade school, he must be pretty long in the tooth now! Posted Image

Maybe so, but like I said, that is not the primary reason this infinitesimal of a percentage of athletes that have come through OG recieved their scholarships.

Tom Heckman is the answer to today's trivia question..........
I know that he went to UD after graduation from OG and he is still one of OG's all-time scoring leaders.....
I think he also still holds the county record for ppg average........

to get this back on track a bit.........
if you go to the WBL All League Honors thread I think you'll find your answer on
"What has happened to Ottawa Glandorf girls basketball?"

the coaches who voted on this have put exactly 1 player from OG out of 26 players named
on the list..........an honorable mention to Maag.......

so I would suspect that what has happened is that the well has gone dry the last few years.......
I know that about 10-12 years ago all the wells around the golf course were going dry also ;)
a lack of talent is the surest way to get a coach fired......when athletes are coming through any
system it surely helps.......when that talent drops off and the losses start to mount, the parents
and fans start to wonder what has changed..........

if they could figure out a way to channel all that water from the Blanchard down into the well,
well that well could soon be pumping out some talent..........

OG's offense this year was predominately freshmen and sophs this year. 7 wins with a team this young isn't all that bad if you ask me. They improved ALOT from the start of the year to the end. I think there's plenty of talent, and I really think that if some people would step back, calm down for a second and see that, they'd realize that Coach Smith isn't doing all that bad of a job. This team just may need another year or so to mature enough to keep up with teams that are full of juniors and seniors.

I know Coach Smith and follow the OG girls program, I also know that what you have posted here is an outright lie. The lady titans have just run low on talent recently, it will get better in the future but not to the level the girls program was from 2001-2005.

Believe me, I don't have anything with the thought of club or AAU ball, it's great for kids to try to increase their competition level. My gripe is that average athletes are concentrating on one sport and in smaller schools, it affects the programs, especially the girls. I'm not sure there is a solution to this, because the availability of club and AAU is here to stay. You are also seeing some of the better track athletes forgoing winter sports to run in indoor track meets and train year around. The byproduct is some weak programs in the area.

Was UD D1 when Heckman played there?
So 2 of the 4 guys who you say played D1 were in the 60's and 70's?
Nutters and no 3 point line......Did they allow the "dunk shot"? lol

BWAHAHAHAHA!

Really??? For a guy who claims to know so much about basketball, this is great!!!!!

Dayton lost to UCLA and a guy named Lew Alcindor in 1967 when Tom was on the team. Yes they were D1 :)

Tom Heckman was an outstanding shooter. He was deadly from the 15 to 19 ft. range. When he was a junior he led Glandorf to the regional finals in the school's last year. As a senior in OG's first year I believe they only lost 2 games. Lima Shawnee was really good that year (Jeff Miller - Ohio player of the year). Remember, there were only 2 division then and OG was in the big school division. He did go to Dayton and was on the team that lost in the finals to UCLA. He didn't play much. I don't think he finished out all 4 years at Dayton. He was a great player in the local industrial leagues in the 1970's. He played for the Bombshelter team out of Glandorf with other former Putnam County stars. Does his brother, Ken, still coach the SP&P 8th grade team?

Right, and the is the biggest reason they recieved those scholarships, it had nothing to do with countless hours of practice mixed in with incredible natural ability. :wallbash:

I am not talking just AAU, I'm talking about AYBT and other club sports where players have to pay (quite a bit, also) to enter tournaments where the emphasis is on running plays and winning by as much as possible instead of individual skill development like ballhandling and shooting.

Also what about the 99% of players that come through the AAU, AYBT and club system that don't get scholarships? As Victorian said earlier they are just lining someone else's pockets.

You should delete your own post and learn how to spell lying

So are you saying that you personally were an OG girls basketball player or coach that witnessed these things taking place? That is the only way you can 100% say you aren't lying and even then I would bet you are lying to some extent.
