Round 1 games of the playoffs are now in the books. I have some observations and predictions.

BVC had a very good year to say the least. The league had three teams in and all three teams were victorious as Pandora-Gilboa, McComb and Leipsic all advanced to round 2. Too bad Leipsic (who just beat #1 Sycamore Mohawk 40-14) has to play McComb. The Panthers took it to Leipsic in the regular season, but don't count the Vikings out just yet. The Rockets (11-0) look to continue their amazing season against Edgerton (11-0). Leipsic vs. Pandora-Gilboa in the regional final.

Northwest Conference tri-champs all played and 2 of the 3 advanced. Spencerville was overwhelmed by Marion Local, Columbus Grove beat a physical Carey team, and Crestview's high flying offense scored 51 on Miami Valley Christian Academy. The Knights now take on the mighty Minster Wildcats. I am going with the Knights in a bit of an upset here. They are very athletic and physical as well. (I think I just got struck by lightning with that prediction!)

Columbus Grove plays Seneca East. I know nothing about Seneca East, but I think they play in the same league as Sycamore Mohawk (10-0) who just got destroyed by Leipsic, so I am going with the Bulldogs in this one.

The MAC had 5 teams competing in 3 different divisions: Anna DV who lost; Minster DVII who advanced, Coldwater, St. Henry and Marion Local in DVI and all advanced. The Cavs play St. Henry in a rematch of 2 weeks ago. Look for the Cavs to take revenge. Marion Local plays Lima Central Catholic (9-1). This could be a great game. LCC's speed vs. the muscle and displicine of the Flyers. Look for Marion Local to advance to the regional final where they will play a rematch of Coldwater from week 10.

Western Buckeye League teams have always fared pretty well in the playoffs, and this year is no exception. In DIII Wapakoneta beat their playoff nemesis Trotwood Madison to advance. They play Middletown Fenwick (9-2) next and I predict another Redskin victory. St. Marys manhandled Pepper Pike Orange 48-13 in a game that was 42-0 at half. Van Wert beat Huron (7-3) 33-14 in a more competitive game. Now they play each other and I look for the Riders to prevail again (I would love the Cougs to win this).

If you want to pick, they are listed below:

Leipsic (10-1) vs. McComb (10-1)

Edgerton (11-0)) vs. Pandora-Gilboa (11-0)

Crestview (10-1) vs. Minster (8-3)

Coldwater (9-2) vs. St. Henry (9-2)

Lima Central Catholic (9-1) vs. Marion Local (10-1)

Wapakoneta (10-1) vs. Middletown Fenwick (9-2)

St. Marys (10-1) vs. Van Wert (9-2)

Columbus Grove (7-3) vs. Seneca East (10-1)

Long known as a basketball hotbed, I am Pretty sure this is the first time all 3 PCL teams advanced in the football playoffs (Grove, Leipsic and Pandora Gilboa.)

Putnam County football...........powered by Busch Light since 1993

Busch Light was founded in 1993? Truly a Putnam Co success story.....
Really looking forward to the LCC/Marion Local clash Friday night....
I believe our Rockets have what it takes and feel their schedule has them ready for Edgerton....PG 29-14
Hopefully the weather will be decent

not sure when Busch light was founded, I am pretty sure I was drinking it before 1993, just felt like a good random year.

Leipsic- Mccomb beat Pandora handily last year in the reg. season and the rockets took them out in the playoffs. i think the Vikings do the same.

Pandora-Gilboa- would love to see an all PCL regional final

Minster- MAC teams rarely lose to NWC teams

Coldwater- tough to beat a good team twice, especially when that team is Coldwater. Cavs avenge regular season loss to the 'skins

Marion Local- I may have taken LCC over Coldwater or St. henry, not Marion Local

Wapakoneta- redskins got the monkey off their back beating Trotwood.

St. Marys- Van Wert has improved alot since the cougs week 3 beatdown at the hands of St. marys, but I think the roughriders take this one

Though not listed, i will take Columbus Grove over Attica Seneca East

McComb over Leipsic - McComb handled Leipsic easily in the regular season and dominated its schedule more than Leipsic did.
P-G over Edgerton - I would never pick a team to go far that never won a playoff game until last week, but this Edgerton team might be very good. Still, can't do it yet.
Minster over Crestview - yeah it's MAC.
St. Henry over Coldwater - tough to beat a team twice in a season but St. Henry's defense looks better.
Marion Local over LCC - nice season for LCC but still nowhere near ML.
Wapak over Fenwick - Redskins barely beat Trotwood's worst team in years, but I think it can still win this week.
St. Marys over Van Wert - It'll be closer than week 3 but Riders are still too tough.

In an interesting note, this will be the second time ever that two WBL teams have played in the playoffs, both involving St. Marys. #2 Bath beat St. Marys 18-12 in a Division III first round game back in 1985, before losing to #3 Orrville in the second round. Also interestingly, Van Wert lost to Orrville in the first round in that same region.

Speaking of beer, Buckeye Brewing Company in Toledo circa 1970 was preparing to introduce a light beer. Miller Brewing heard about it and swooped down to Toledo and negotiated a deal to purchase the brewery. They promptly closed it and introduced Miller Lite soon after. Not sure when Bud Light came on the scene.

The ML website says Miller Lite introduced in 1973. Budweiser actually introduced “Budweiser Light” earlier and it flopped. Then came back with Bud Light in 1982 and the rest is history

Dark Knight, Teddy Malone, do you want to edit your choices to add the Grove game?

I will continue to do the playoffs if you all want me to.

Thanks

I know a lot of people aren't picking them, But look for Van Wert to not only upset St. Mary's, but do it convincingly. Week three had numerous kids sick with food poisoning, and they are improved 100X since the beginning of the year. They are hitting on all cylinders at the right time!

Forgot to include Fairview in these games. Two GMC teams in Regional Finals.
