I have to wonder if Riverdale just loads the box again this year or they play real soccer. Guess we will find out tomorrow. Love to hear others thought on this game.

I'd say they played real soccer. Had L-B's goalie not moved early on the PK, we might have had overtime.

Very questionable penalty to start with, but overall a very good game from both teams. Would be nice to see a team from NW Ohio continue the march to Columbus.

There were a number of questionable calls/no-calls from the officials...both ways. Of course, I'm sure that (depending on our allegiance) we'd argue that the team we root for got the short end of the deal on those questionable calls on most occasions. Regardless, the game was hard-fought.

I am not a huge soccer fan, however, I am not surprised there is whining coming from the Falcon Faithful. Seems to be a theme with them. Can't wait for them to join the BVC.

I was looking at the paper today and saw the Riverdale girl mugging the LB girl and a co-worker of mine tells me there was no call. What would falconfan84 recall about that play? Just "a hard-fought play"?

I hate to lose to LB, especially if it would mean ending the season, but come on. We'll get you some cheese to go with your w(h)ine!

Maybe there didn't need to be a call on that particular play? The LB player in the pic is a very good player, and also very strong. Assuming the play did not happen in the penalty area ( I don't think it did, as there appear to be stands in the background), it is quite possible she recovered from the foul and gained possession of the ball. if she did, it may have been to her and LB's advantage for the play to continue on. The foul is observed and likely noted by the official, but play is not stopped.

THIS. This is what I mean by questionable calls/no-calls in this game. Undoubtedly a foul by a Falcon player...but not called. Not whining at all! I said the calls were bad BOTH WAYS. HOWEVER...if you speak to others who were also at the game, there were a number of calls where players went to the ground (when the play was not made on the ball, but the player) and the call was made, but was hard to believe which team got the benefit. I don't think the ref always got a good look at what was going on...and the sideline refs never made any calls, except for an off-sides or to signal for subs. At least with a 2-ref system, there were 2 sets of eyes making calls and blowing whistles instead of only one.

The "mugging" incident occurred just past midfield, so not near the penalty area, and if I remember correctly, L-B kept possession. She was clearly slowed down, however...and that's why I thought Riverdale got away with a foul in that instance. This ONE example was caught on camera, but there were numerous others that could have went the other way as well...but usually didn't.

L-B controlled the game for the most part, but in the end I felt too many opportunities were taken away where Riverdale might have been able to get a momentum swing...but more often than not, the call went against us (even when it appeared it shouldn't).

Its funny when people complain about calls and officials when they clearly dont undetstand the rules. I have a funny feeling you didnt think they called enough "handballs" either....lol

That same mugging took place all game (she was double teamed every time she touched the ball). The LB player is very strong and on several occasions she muscled her way through, only to get called for a foul. The problem was her arms were at her side and when she was grabbed she kept going and the Riverdale player fell. The ref stayed basically in the center of the field and watched a good game from several yards away. Refs need to understand that just because someone falls it isnt always a foul. You never want to see a game like this decided on a pk and unfortunately it nearly came down to that. The ref made a judgement call and gave a pk on an obvious shoulder to shoulder play that wasn't even going toward the goal...he nearly did the same thing later in the game when two girls went up or a header...whistle was in hs mouth but he didn't blow it. Much harder fouls (both ways) took place on the field the entire game with no call.

As I said, I'm glad we have some NW teams still in the post season and it looked like LB has the depth and the skill to keep the run alive. We will get a chance to see how they match up against Smithville tomorrow night.

Speaking of 2 ref system. Why is it they use only one ref for playoffs, when most of the season, there is 2 refs. And why if you have refs on the sidelines, can they only call out of bounds? I mean I know why there are refs on the sidelines, but to have them and have them watching the game but can only throw a flag up for offside and who's possession. Anyone know?

1-A 3-man crew is only used for the playoffs due to lack of refs available for games during the regular season. Everyone would love a 3-man crew at every game, but there's merely not enough refs to go around for every game to make this possible.
2-Assisted refs (sidelines) can call fouls as well as make recommendations for cards if they see something they don't think the center official saw. You see AR calls happen more often at higher levels of play due to play being faster paced and the ball traveling up/down the field quicker. At the end of the day though, if the AR sees the center official is in position to make a call and lets play continue, then they trust their judgement as lead official.
