Anna dominates Fort, wins 31-7

By Tom Galdeen

Fort Recovery travelled to Anna on Friday, September 13 with a 2-0 record, but Friday the 13th didn't end up being a lucky one for the Indians. Anna was coming into the game 1-1 having lost last week to Brookville. They turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and celebrated a 31-7 win.

Each team had 3 possessions in the first quarter and neither team could dent the scoring column, but the quarter ended with Anna at the 2 yard line, first and goal. Three running plays were stuffed by the Indians defense and Anna had to settle for a Shaun Wenrick 18 yard field goal. Fort Recovery responded to that scoring drive with a scoring drive of their own. The Indians took 9 plays, ending with a Darien Sheffer to Mitch Stammen 21 yard touchdown pass to take the lead 7-3. The drive was highlighted by an 11 yard pass to Cole Hull and an 11 yard pass to Stammen to keep the drive alive. Anna only took 5 plays to respond, with Christian Williams carrying the ball on 4 of the plays. On first down from their own 33, Williams ran 42 yards to the Indians 25. after 3 plays picked up a first down at the 14 yard line, Williams took it in from there to give Anna the 10-7 lead. Fort Recovery stalled on the next possession and punted after 3 plays. On first down from the Indians 42 yard line, Anna QB John Robinson hooked up with Chandler Cotterman for 42 yards and the quick score, giving Anna a 17-7 lead. Fort Recovery was able to mount a drive highlighted by a 19 yard pass to Evan Schoen and a 10 yard pass to Mitch Stammen. A 6 yard pass to Stammen put the Indians at the 20 yard line with 3 seconds left. Jackson Hobbs 37 yard field goal went wide right and the half ended 17-7.

The second half started with the 2 teams trading punts for 2 possesssions each. On their third possession of the half, Anna took over on the Fort 40 yard line. Two plays netted -1 yard before Robinson hit Ryan Counts with a 40 yard pass to the Indians 1 yard line. After a running play lost 2 yards, Robinson found Wes Showalter in the end zone for the score. With the extra point Anna now led 24-7

Anna's next possession started in the 3rd quarter, but ended in quarter #4. It also ended in the end zone, took 18:49 off the clock and ended the scoring for the night. Christian Williams became a workhorse for the Rockets as he carried the ball 10 times in the 12 play drive. He picked up 38 of the 46 yards on the drive and scored on a 6 yard run with only 5:31 left in the game. That score made it Anna 31, Fort Recovery 7.
