In February, the NCAA accused the university football coach, Rich Rodriguez and former graduate assistant, Alex Herron of five potentially major infractions.
Rodriguez allegedly failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance within his program; Herron allegedly lied to NCAA investigators; the university was charged with failing to monitor its football program and the program itself with exceeding staff size limits and holding impermissible practices.

That school up north -- University of Michigan -- has admitted to a series of violations in its football program. The school insisted the problems related to practice time and the activities of graduate assistants. The school hopes the self-imposed sanctions will satisfy the NCAA.

Penalties self-imposed by the Michigan football program Tuesday:

Michigan said it will cut back practice and training time by 130 hours over the next two years, starting this summer. It also trimmed the number of assistants -- the so-called quality-control staff -- from five to three and banned them from practices, games or coaching meetings for the rest of 2010.



What they’re trying to do is trying to make it as close to possible as to what the Committee on Infractions will make it anyway. Their hope is for the Committee on Infractions to agree with the university’s responses and not to add any punishment.

Do you think these self imposed penalties should suffice or should the commitee impose further/their own sanctions?

I think it's enough. The loss of practice time will kill them. Young teams who have struggled the last few years need all the practice they can get. As long as the NCAA watches them closely and holds them to their reduced time, I can't see them winning much more than 7 or 8 games in any season while they're on probation.

Who Cares what they do All NCAA teams do this they just got caught with there hand in the cookie jar.
At least they are not like USC who should get hit harder than what they are going to now that is BS.
Also UM have only won what 5 games last year and are what 7-19 under coach Rod.
they are not that team up north and TOSU will continue to catch up to them in wins this year and as long as he is there

I recently talked to a guy whose sister works at the University of Michigan. He told me according to his sister that Rich Rodriguez is a short leash as far as continuing to be the head coach of the Wolverines. If he does not have a winning season or at least beat Ohio State, he is history in Ann Arbor. The fans of the U of M are getting mighty restless with the sub 500 season much less getting their can kicked by Ohio State over the last 5 or so years. Throw in the sanctions and whatever else may come down the road from the NCAA, and Rich Rodriguez will wish he never left Morgantown. Time will tell.

I may be wrong on this but several years ago Ohio Northern was caught for holding impermissable practice and they ended up being banned by the NCAA from the postseason for a year and their coach at the time was fired.
Not that ONU has any scholarships to give up like Michigan would, but shouldn't the penalty imposed by the NCAA be similiar regardless of division?

Yeah, but I think there was more to it than that. But they did get turned in for illegal practices or something like that according to what I was told. Then investigations turned up more things that led to the coach's canning.

This program has went from powerhouse to a complete joke. Rich Rodriguez looks like he has no clue whats going on. He has never been a good recruiter and doesnt seem to be the brightes guy in the world. I hope Michigan keeps him for a while.
