I think the rub is that a school the size of Van Buren (D3 now) should dominate the BVC (all D4 except LB). Especially since there are no other winter sports except wrestling (which is dying at most schools). People complain that LB has such and advantage over the other BVC schools because of size, yet Van Buren is now D3 also.

I'm glad someone else recognizes this. I always chuckled when everyone said LB should get kicked out of the BVC because they were too big. Using that logic, then Van Buren should get the boot as well, but that will never happen because Van Buren doesn't even come close to being dominant in any sport. Simply being a bigger school doesn't equate to success. Heck, McComb won the all sports trophy last year with an enrollment that is roughly 35% smaller than LB's. Sometimes the kids at a school have a work ethic that is better than what you'll find somewhere else.

I don't think your statement about VB not coming close to dominating in any sport is not accurate. The boys golf team has dominated the BVC for over a decade (and gone to state several times). The girls soccer team dominated last year and will probably again next season. VB basketball has had a few down years. Every school (except LB I guess) goes through this. There is some talent on the team, but this year was a rebuilding year. Next year should be better and the year after even better.

This is true in the NWC with Paulding, being the biggest school, and Not succeeding alot.

Eskimo, you just said a mouthful, and touched on a topic I think that would make many angry. Suffice it to say that sometimes, just because you offer alot of sports, does not put any in a dominant situation. It's a little ironic, Van Buren has kind of become Findlay north, dominant in only golf and soccer. Most BVC schools don't have soccer so it's tough to qualify that as being dominant in that sport, and I think only 5 or 6 schools offer golf. While it's great to offer all of these sports, you can't have 30 golfers, a soccer program and expect the football team to ever have a chance, just too few kids.

Why would I make anyone mad by what I said? Honestly, I don't think anyone on the golf team would help the football team. Maybe one or two of them could play, but probably not make a difference. Van Buren is not a football school. Twice in the last 20 years I think they've had a 500 season. I think in the near future though, VB will have some good years in football. TIme will tell.

Sorry Eskimo, my underlying point was that the football teams struggles really coincided with the addition of soccer. Van Buren's youth soccer program is huge, and good for youth soccer. The byproduct is that many kids bypassed football and it's very difficult to be successul in both. Those 4/5 soccer kids per class could be your skill position football players (DB's, RB's, WR's). Again great for participantion numbers, but success??

If my memory is still working correctly, I think the departure of Dennis Martin as the main cog of the basketball program coincided with the addition of boys soccer at Van Buren. Once that program came in Dennis was smart enough to know it wouldn't just impact the football program, but would also lead to the lil' kickers wanting to play indoor soccer all winter long instead of hoopin' it up. Not only that, but they would want to play spring soccer as well, taking the kids away from his second love--baseball. So Dennis took his talents to St. Wendelin and rebuilt that once dominant baseball program into a powerhouse....laughing at what VB let slip right through their fingers.
