D4 Boys Sectional Championships at Coldwater

Coldwater hosted D4 Sectional Championships on Friday,March 2. In the first game the Minster Wildcats took on the Fort Recovery Indians. Game 2 would pit the New Bremen Cardinals against the St. Henry Redskins. The #1 seeded Indians held off Minster and won 54-35,and the #2 seed St. Henry is heading to District with a 61-38 dismantling of New Bremen.

In game 1 Fort Recovery set the tone early scoring the first 10 points in the game with four different players getting into the scoring column before Austin Knapke hit a pair of free throws with 2:19 left in the quarter. An Elijah Kahlig three pointer gave the Indians a 14-2 lead before Ryan Hoying scored to end the quarter with FR leading14-4.

Minster's offense heated up a little bit in the second quarter. Foul trouble began to mount for the Indians as well as Jared Kahlig and Ben Dilworth went to the bench and Derek Gaerke picked up three fouls as well.. Jason Pottkotter and Wade Gelhaus gave the Indians an 18-4 lead,but a three pointer by Brandon Hoying started a 7-0 run by the Wildcats that cut the lead to 18-11. Devon Poeppelman nailed a trey for the Wildcats to get within 5 but Kent Retz answered with a three to send Fort Recovery to the locker room with a 22-14 lead.

The third quarter got under way with the Indians scoring the first 7 points to extend the lead to 15 at 29-14. Minster outscored the Indians 10-6 the rest of the quarter, paced by a three pointer by Poeppelman to cut the lead 9 at 35-26.

A nice spin move by Pottkotter got the Indians going in the fourth quarter. Knapke hit a three for Minster,but the Indians then started an 8-0 run to get the lead up to 16 points with a little over 5 minutes to play. Minster was unable to mount a run at the Indians and FR pulled away for the 54-35 win.

Wade Gelhaus lead the Indians with 18 points and Jason Pottkotter added 17. Devon Poeppelman was the only Wildcat in double figures with 12.

In the second game,the teams traded buckets in the early going. A three pointer by Mitch Davis gave St. Henry a 19-7 lead after a triple by New Bremen's Derek Bornhorst had tied it. Kyle Stahl backed into the lane to score to give SH a 15-9 lead. Aaron Clune cut it to 15-11 for NB, but Nate Uhlenhake scored at the buzzer to end the quarter at 17-11.

New Bremen made a run at the Skins in the second quarter. A Bornhorst three made the score 19-14. Craig Knapke made it 21-14 for SH. A pair of Bornhorst Free throws and a trey by Clune sandwiched got NB to within three at 23-20. St. henry answered though,scoring the next 9 points highlighted by a pair of Davis three pointers. A Bornhorst three ended the quarter as the Skins headed to the second half up 32-23.

In the third quarter SH went on a 10-0 run to extend the lead to 42-25. After an exchange of free throws the quarter ended with St. Henry leading 43-28.

New Bremen could not mount an offensive run at the Redskins as St. Henry slowly increased their lead. A three point play by Redskin Ryan Mikesell ended the scoring with SH winning 61-38.

Kyle Stahl and Jordan Bender lead a balanced attack for St. Henry with 11 points apiece. Derek Bornhost was the game's leading scorer with 16 points for New Bremen.

Fort Recovery advances to the District to take on Delphos St. Johns and St. Henry will take on Crestview at Elida on Tuesday night.
