I can tell you how this will go... If you want an example, look at EVERY other small school! Holgate is now in the cyclical rotation based talent. They will wait however long for that rare talented string of kids to come through the small school, be competitive or even dominant (see Leipsic this year) for a while and then fall off. What Wayne's style allowed them to do for so many years was avoid the beatings that most small schools take during those "off years". When you hang your hat on a Leipsic or OG style, you better have the horses! That style will get you blown out of the gym if you don't have the talent, which in a small school can be quite often! Now, what his style also did was made his "talented years" perhaps a little less fan friendly than they might have been with a different style. I'm sure there are many who would accept the years of thrashings to have a few years of uptempo excitement when the talent comes through. It's all a matter of opinion. My personal thought is that considering how small Holgate is, I think Wayne's style was the perfect fit and gave them the best chance to be competitive EVERY night. I'd rather watch overmatched teams constantly compete with superior talent however "boring" some may say it is than I would watch a team run up and down trading shots...the better talent always wins that one! At a school with an enrollment count of 53, most years, that's not you. Again, my opinion! On the years it works, the new guy will be a savior. During the years it doesn't, and those 29-27 losses have become 65-35, people will be begging for the deliberate style!
I personally completely agree. I've been defending Holgate and their style for years. It's not MY preference on the type of game I want to watch, but I can't fault a coach for running the style that gives him the best chance to win. And in the end, I'd take a 29-27 win over a 70-65 loss anyday.
