Just saw in the Lima News that Bath is looking for a new head volleyball coach. What's up there and where is coach Benda going? Anyone have some insight?

Mansfield Madison coach Jen Lauber resigned after 5 successful season. Three state final four appearances. Her daughter will graduate in June and she received a volleyball scholarship at Juniata in Pennsylvania. Coach Lauber can't see her daughter play and run a high school program. Madison fans appreciate the excellent job she did. Rams will be young next year, but the program has some talent.

Heard Coach Benda's work load is increasing next year and didn't think she could do a good job of coahcing and doing do all her work duties at the same time.

She has a history of changing jobs also.

I'm pretty sure Tom Hanks is going to take over. Volleyball really speaks to him

Everytime I see the name Bath Volleyball I have to crack up. I was working concessions at the Bath LCC volleyball game. It was the JV game. A Bath mother came stomping out of the gym, looked at us and SCREAMED....."Your popcorn is to salty" and left. She certainly had us scratching our heads wondering what she was so mad about.....found out.... LCC won. Oh well, can't please everyone!

I have done my own head scratching over Bath's volleyball team. They had a D 1 athlete, (Liz Brock) surrounded by a supporting cast of softball and basketball players that might be volleyball walk-ons at a D 3 school. (although to their credit, had no desire to because for several of them, volleyball was their recreation, not their vocation). One would think that since the goal of varsity sports is largely winning as apposed to player development, Brock would be set as much as possible. While she was set more that the other players, the former coach's insistence on spreading the wealth certainly cost the team victories.

Coach Benda has a pretty good track record of winning and getting the most out of teams. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said players playing as recreation rather than committing to the sport. And you have to throw in the other thing of the D1 player only caring about one thing, getting set more. You need 6 kids on the court playing toward one goal. Not one and 5 others.

You will find that in all sports, player development is key for winning. Winning is a bi-product of getting better each and every day.

I'm sure that Hendrick Motor Sports has a team of professionals that prepare the car each week so it can race properly. But when it comes to Sunday afternoon when it's time to win, you don't let the semi driver who brought the car cross country drive the racecar. You let Jimmy Johnson do that.

Let me know when the sport of volleyball changes and one player can not only attempt to block, but then bump it, set it and also spike it, all in the same sequence. Maybe I don't know the basic concepts or rules anymore. I would be willing to bet if Miss Brock would have helped her teammates learn the concepts of passing, she would have gotten set more. But then again that would take a little team work and from your posts, I don't see to much of that going on.

Ah, Milt. Where do I start? I would first say that your suggestion that Brock should have helped her teammates pass better counters your arguement that the coach knew what she was doing. Secondly, a good coach identifies the stars early, and takes advantage of them. In Bath football, Coach Miller saw Aaron Smith run and decided he would have a running team. In Girls Basketball, Greg Mauk changed from the best three point shooting team a few years ago, (Mauk, Mauk, & Hopkins) to a team that now primarily works the ball in to his big girls, (Ruhe, & Singhaus). You use what you got to win. And when you have a volleyball player that can touch the basketball rim, you use her until she's gone.

So when Brock had 10+ hitting errors in their tourney loss this season, you keep setting her the ball? Or do you set the Davis girl once in a while?

Again, any names being thrown around over there for a coach?

They interviewed the ex Celina coach, but decided against hiring her for a technicality related to her former position that I won't go into here. As of a couple of days ago, they had not zeroed in on anyone worth hiring yet.

I'm sure all ten of those errors were Liz's fault off of perfect sets. I'll send a DVD of it to her college coach to see if we can get that scholarship yanked, lol.

As for Davis, she will be a fine player with some seasoning. It looked to me last year that she just had a tendency to get too far under the ball on her kills

Angie Schroeder will be the new volleyball coach - previously coached under Coach Benda at Columbus Grove. Good Luck to her and hope the volleyball program gets turned around. :)

Brock is an excellent player but the nature of the VB game only allows her to be in the front row half the time. As great a player as Lebron is, he has difficulty winning playing 3/4 of the time! Benda righted the ship at Bath. Not an easy task where Basketball and softball get a lot of the publicity and tradition. Benda made Bath respectable again and has laid the groundwork for Schroeder. I wish her the best of luck.

They must not think too poorly of Coach Benda over there if they fill the HC job with one of her former assistants.

Schroeder should do a nice job!

I heard from one of the players that Coach did not want to quit & will continue to help as she can especially with summer stuff. She is being asked to assume more duties as a teacher & athletic trainer & feels that she does not have time to give the vb program the attention it deserves. The girls also said they thought she had a some say in the hiring of coach schroeder. I wish them all the best as I know from watching coach benda's teams @ grove & bath, she cares about the kids & loves the game!
