From the looks of it it looks like there are a lot of people disguised as empty seats. :coffee:

By far the lowest first day attendance since the tourney has moved to the Schott....and Ohio State didn't have a game today so that's not a factor. No big name players....a lot of small privates who don't bring any fans...and crappy weather. Worst combination you can get!!! I don't expect tomorrow to be much better...even with a couple of "marquee" guys!!!

At $12 a game and a 1.5 hour game length, it's TOO expensive for 12 high school basketball games. Two weeks ago, went to the men's and women's MAC championship and at the ticket window, found $10 tickets that got us into 2 games in the 100 level. Bought a beer, watched 2 college men's basketball games and enjoyed 3 evenings of basketball. Will be attending again next year.

Why is everyone obsessed with attendance numbers?

Absolutely pathetic attendance. But I think the $$ factor is true. Not cheap for a dad to bring 2 or 3 kids with him.....tickets and high priced concessions.....not cheap. It's a shame because I think it's a great event for kids to see, and an event that brings back so many memories for those of us adults who have attended for so many years

The old diehards are getting old and there aren't many young guys replacing them.

You my friend hit the nail on the hammer with that remark. If you think that it is bad now give it a couple more years and the attendance at the state tournament will be abysmal to say the least. The days of the attendance matching the attendance to the girls tournament are rapidly coming. As mentioned above the cost of tickets, concessions etc, are just too much for a guy to take his kid or kids to handle. I know that there are naysayers that may disagree with this remark, but how else can you explain it? These clowns at the OHSAA just do not understand this concept. When you have to spend money to advertise to the fans to come to the tournament you know that they are grasping for straws. As long as Dan Ross is the commissioner of the OHSAA, it is not gonna improve. Throw in the private school public school debate on who is creating these ringer teams and that is what you got. Just friggin sad!

Happy to see Defiance had the only game in 5 figures so far. From the pictures I've seen it looks like there was a pretty evident sea of blue that made the trip.

Some of guys keep blaming the OHSAA for low attendance. The norm is fewer people are attending HS athletic events across the board, not just at the state tourney level. There are exceptions but in general, attendance is down at ALL events... Not sure when but HS athletics as we've known them is coming to an end. 20, 30 years from now, it'll all be some variation of club sports.

You might be on to something there.......with the higher ticket prices being charged, the OHSAA is comfortable with less customers...kinda
like a Men's Warehouse or Kay Jewelers.....make a little more profit on each customer while reducing costs....less cleanup costs, less
ticket takers to pay, etc.....and I believe you're correct as to the eventual death of high school athletics as we know them....the VASJ's,
Lima Sr's, etc. have ruined my perspective of how it is all supposed to work.....

It gives the grumpy folks an opportunity to complain about how high school sports these days are going to he//.

http://www.dispatch....olumn-0329.html

Article about this subject. Numbers don't lie, and they are down..........didn't realize how much until I read this. I like the idea of combining sessions. Maybe have 2 games back to back 10:45 with the next game immediately following and another double session starting at 5:00.

Do Not like the idea of going to Fri.-Sat.-Sun. I understand more people could get off of work and make it a 3 day weekend instead of having to take off Thurs. and Fri........but I need Sunday to recover.

Notice they didn't mention ticket prices.
