The other night a girl at second, next batter hit a triple. The other coach told umpire that runner missed first base, not going thru the proper procedure to do the appeal correct, umpire called the runner out at first. When did this change?

I think that rule's been in place for awhile. I think once the play ends, if an umpire sees a player miss a base, he can declare that runner out, does not need it asked by the opposing team.
