WBL Prediction Contest, Week 10
#1
Posted 22 October 2018 - 10:15 PM
(2-7) Elida at O-G (4-5)
(8-1) Wapak at St. Marys (9-0)
(4-5) Shawnee at Celina (4-5)
(4-5) Defiance at Van Wert (7-2)
Last week was one of the easiest weeks in history and it accomplished nothing for the contest. There were only 2 misses out of 60 picks from 12 people. 2 people did not enter picks, for the 1st time since near the beginning of the season, leaving only 10 now that have picked every week. There were 4 unanimous picks and only 2 people missed 1 pick each, so everyone went 5-0 except 2 people who went 4-1.
The consensus easily went 5-0, with the only blemish on all games being unanimous coming from 2 people picking Celina to beat Van Wert.
With one week to go, it comes down to Stallionaires or Maltese Falcon for the title. Fortunately it looks like we could have at least 2, maybe 3 competitive games, so it could get interesting.
Standings:
1.
40-10 Stallionaires
2.
39-11 Maltese Falcon
3.
37-13 hortdog
4.
35-15 Hound Dog
35-15 Stafford
35-15 Teddy Malone
35-15 waterloowonder
8.
33-17 haydenfox50
33-17 Rusty Shackleford
10.
28-22 Ain’t No Sin
Others:
31-14 justin44
31-14 The Guilty Bystander
29-16 wishbone
25-15 von
11-4 TiGgEr3
5-5 Tincup
4-6 Adog

Region 12:
Wapak could move into the #1 spot with a win over St. Marys, even if Alter wins, but that would make it tougher. Trotwood is sitting down there at the bottom of the playoff list, but Wapak could avoid them if the Rams win. If Wapak loses, a couple teams winning below it could push it out of a home playoff game but maybe not lower than 5th.
Region 14:
St. Marys has already clinched a home game and could move into #1 with a win over Wapak. However, the top 2 in this region are so far ahead of everyone else that they are probably locked into those 2 positions.
Van Wert controls its own destiny, and with a win shouldn't drop from 3rd place, I don't think anyone can catch it.
Kenton isn't going to get many points this week and things could get dicey if everyone behind it wins, but at least 2 of those teams need to beat 0 or 1 loss teams. That leaves 3 other teams in about 50/50 games and Kenton can only drop 2 spots. If Kenton does sneak in it would play at Clear Fork or St. Marys.
At most, 4 WBL teams could be in the playoffs, kind of odd that 3 are in one region. It's more likely that 3 make it and there's a good chance all 3 could host a game. I can remember several recent years in which WBL teams hosted no playoff games.

Ottawa-Glandorf over Elida - The Titans finish 2018 on a high note.
St. Marys over Wapakoneta - The Redskins have improved throughout the season but I think the Roughriders are just the better team.
Shawnee over Celina - The Indians have been playing some of their best football of late.
Van Wert over Defiance - The Cougars cap off an impressive season by clinching a playoff spot.

O-G - Rough year for Elida, here maybe Speller is moving on?, OG ends season 5-5 winning 3 of their last 4
Wapak - Need to catch Stallionaires
Celina- two teams trending in opposite directions to end the season, but see comments above
Van Wert- two teams also headed in opposite directions. VW will be a tough out in the playoffs

O-G over Elida - Titans seem to have no more than 2 weeks in a row of good or bad play, but Elida has been bad most of the year.
St. Marys over Wapak - I almost picked Wapak just to be different but...I think it's the last game at St. Marys' old field so I'll go with that.
Shawnee over Celina - I didn't really realize that Shawnee has been playing pretty well the 2nd half of the season, albeit against easier competition.
Van Wert over Defiance - Even though Defiance has made the playoffs just twice in the last 15 years, amazingly, this is only the 4th class to go all the way through high school without making the playoffs, since the Class of 95 started high school in 1991.
I spent way too much time thinking about these, damn it.

12 people made picks in the final week, which ties for the lowest all year. There were just 10 people who picked every week, which is amazingly 2 more than last year's all-time low. Most people went 3-2, with the only perfect this week being Maltese Falcon who amazingly won outright, passing Stallionaires, who finished with a 3-2 record this week. This is Falcon's first WBL Contest title. Almost everyone finished with a different final record oddly; only 3 people tied for 5th place. The consensus in the final week went 3-2, with 3 unanimous picks and only 1 close game:
Kenton over Bath 12-0 (win)
O-G over Elida 12-0 (win)
Van Wert over Defiance 12-0 (win)
St. Marys over Wapak 11-1 (loss)
Shawnee over Celina 7-5 (loss)
It was a rough middle of the season as weeks 4-6 had a lot of losing records, and week 1 had a few. But the last 4 weeks of the season everyone improved their record.
Final standings:
1.
44-11 Maltese Falcon (80.0%)
2.
43-12 Stallionaires (78.2%)
3.
40-15 hortdog (72.7%)
4.
39-16 Hound Dog (70.9%)
5.
38-17 Stafford (69.1%)
38-17 Teddy Malone
38-17 waterloowonder
8.
37-18 haydenfox50 (67.3%)
9.
36-19 Rusty Shackleford (65.5%)
10.
32-13 Ain’t No Sin (58.2%)
Others:
35-15 The Guilty Bystander (40-15 tied for 3rd without the missing week) (70.0%)
31-14 justin44 (68.9%)
29-16 wishbone (64.4%)
28-17 von (62.2%)
11-4 TiGgEr3 (73.3%)
5-5 Tincup (50.0%)
4-6 Adog (40.0%)
Most perfect weeks: Maltese Falcon (4, several had 3)
Most in a row: Maltese Falcon didn't miss a pick the final 3 weeks, no one else had even back-to-back perfect weeks.
Most losing weeks: 2 people had 4, while 1 person had 3. That might be a record.
There were no winless weeks, and just one 1-4 record all year long.
Between 12-16 people made picks every week. The total number of people, 17, is the 2nd fewest after last year's 15. Only one person joined in after the first week. Maltese started in first place alone with a great 9-1 first week, then tied with Stallionaires for the next 2 weeks, before Stallionaires led the next 6 weeks alone, up until week 9. Usually someone who didn't do it every week finishes with a higher percentage than the all-week champ, but not this year. By the way, Falcon's winning record tied for the 3rd worst winning record in contest history, with the worst being an amazing 6 games worse.
2017: waterloowonder (43-12)
2016: Stallionaires, Teddy Malone (48-7)
2015: BHS_Wildcats, waterloowonder (47-8)

2011: Bengal WhoDey (48-7)
2010: waterloowonder (46-9)
2009: D-Town Bulldogs, kftball45 (45-10)
2008: blitzman, childz_play, eddiepittinger, limafbnut, player89 (46-9)
