If anyone can do better, I suggest you join the referee ranks.

Add coaching to that as well. And parenting. And pretty much anything, I guess.

Did anyone notice that the Bluffton-Coldwater game was graced with the presence of Derryberry AND Mangus?

Which one of those two made the game more about them than the players? I vote Mangus.

I think it is a thankless job. These guys were very consistent and would have them ref every game that I had if possible.

I would ref some in practice and I will tell you, you don't see everything. A player cuts in front of you for just a quick second and you miss a foul, travel, etc. and the kid would say, why didn't you call that coach. I didn't see it. It is always easier to bitch and complain and I have said this since day one when I entered coaching. I felt that a referee's should not miss one call in a game then my team should not miss one shot, foul shot or make any mistake what so ever. Obviously that didn't happen so why should a ref not be allowed to miss something. Go back and see how many foul shots, lay ups, bad passes your team made that would have changed the outcome? Most fans just remember the call in the last few seconds and then blame the refs!

Enjoyed the article, thanks for posting.

Coach,

That's a very interesting take on refs that I've never even considered.....kudos to you for reminding us that officials are indeed human and therefore not perfect. Made this old guy think about that. Thanks!

the 3rd ref should sit in the stands. ive always felt you can see a lot more from the stands then you can see from the floor.

Good article about officiating and what it takes to be an official.

As long as the Rainbow trout isn't involved, I would say that Dingle and Oren are fine......put them together.....like Koza would say.....DISASTER!

Trout is a synonym for tool. I wish the short guy would realize that people pay 6 bucks to watch the kids.....not him!!!!! Please retire.....we've had enough of your self righteous ego driven act. Please get over yourself. Would take Derryberry and Oren ANY day of the week.....decent guys who don't believe they are better than everyone else or bigger than the game!

As bad as I think the Troutmeister is, I still become violently ill when Mangas walks out on the floor.

I have seen Trout numerous times since his State Tournament debacle 10 or so years ago, and he has been okay. I am always waiting for something to happen, but it hasn't. He seems to be blending in well with the game and not drawing as much attention to himself. Just my observation.

He called a very questionable technical, after making several other weird calls. It looked like he was picking on one team. It didn't go over well with the fans in attendance. During a timeout after the T he was left at midcourt by the other 2 officials (they abandoned him) and received strong round of boos by 90% of the crowd. I have never seen anything like it in Cbus before or after.

I am pretty sure it was more recent than 2000, the game was Upper Sandusky- Dunbar. Upper Sandusky had Jon Diebler and Dunbar had DaQuean Cook. 2007, it was a NW Ohio officiating crew. It was the game Diebler broke his nose and still scored 48 pts. in the game that Dunbar would go on to win.

I'm not exactly sure when it was. I checked my 2008 State Tourn. program that had box scores from 2007. Trout did not do the Upper - Dunbar game. It was definitely after Ft. Jennings, but not exactly sure when.
